St Catherines Island

The island is around 10 miles long and 1 to 3 miles wide, with a wide sandy beach that stretches for nearly 11 miles. More than half of the island's 14,640 acres are tidal marsh and wetlands, while the remaining area is wooded, with pine and live oak being the predominant tree species.

The island has a rich history, dating back to the 16th century when it was inhabited by the Guale Indians. In the late 1500s, Spanish Franciscan friars established a small mission outpost on the island to convert the Indians to Christianity. The mission was burned down during a rebellion in 1597 but was reestablished in 1605, becoming the primary mission-presidio of the Spanish in the region. The mission was eventually abandoned in 1680 due to Native revolts, disease epidemics, and pirate raids, among other issues.

In the 1730s, Savannah's founder, James Oglethorpe, claimed the island as part of the Georgia colony. However, Mary Musgrove, Oglethorpe's interpreter, challenged this claim, asserting that she and her husband had received the island from the Creeks. The couple was awarded St. Catherines in the 1760s and leased it to Button Gwinnett, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The island was run as a plantation until the Civil War ended in 1865.

After the Civil War, St. Catherines was granted to the Freedmen's Bureau by Sherman's Special Field Orders No. 15. Tunis Campbell, an African-American leader, established a government on the island, with schools and a militia to keep white people off the island. However, when Sherman's orders were repealed, Campbell was evicted, and the island reverted to its previous owner.

In 1943, the island was purchased by Edward John Noble, a New York businessman, who used it to raise Black Angus cattle. After his death in 1958, the island was transferred to the Edward J. Noble Foundation in 1968. Today, the island is owned by the St. Catherines Island Foundation, a nonprofit organisation dedicated to conservation, the survival of endangered species, and the preservation of historic sites. The foundation also aims to expand human knowledge in various scientific and educational disciplines.
