The Sultan of Brunei's collection of cars is the largest private car collection in the world, consisting of approximately 7,000 cars, with an estimated combined value of over US$5 billion. Within his collection of cars, the Sultan's collection of Ferrari F40s, McLaren F1s, and Rolls-Royce vehicles are particularly notable due to the rarity of the vehicles and their value.
The Sultan holds the Guinness World Record for the largest private Rolls-Royce collection, with around 150 cars. The Sultan's collection includes the Rolls-Royce Cloudesque, a modernised version of the Silver Cloud. The Rolls-Royce Cloudesque was conceived as a modernised version of the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud, produced from 1955 to 1966, having undergone engine modifications and transmission upgrades. The Cloudesque was extended in length and used unitary construction and modern engine and running gear. The car was designed by Futura Design in Birmingham and built by Tickfords from Milton Keynes.
The Sultan of Brunei custom ordered four Silver Clouds, named the Rolls-Royce Cloudesque. The car was also referred to as the Rolls-Royce Cloudesque Phantom Limousine. The Cloudesque was built on the Silver Spur III Touring Limousine technics. Two examples were finished in "Special grey", one in black, and one of unknown colour. All cars were trimmed in black hides. The engine was the same as in the Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit III/Spur III (1995), without a turbo and without a catalyst. The Cloudesque features the letter "H" on the fifth position in the chassis number, indicating a non-standard model for selected customers, especially Brunei.
Three Rolls-Royce Cloudesque cars were made, two in 1995 and another in 1997. The cars featured 6.75-litre V8, naturally aspirated, non-catalyst exhaust system engines, were built in Crewe, right-hand drive with twin airbags. The registration number plate of the UK car is N282 AMP. The Brunei number plates are BQ 6363 and KF 7899.

The Sultan's collection includes the Phantom VI, previously used by the British monarchy
The Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, has an extensive car collection, with around 7,000 cars in total, including many one-off vehicles. This collection is the largest private car collection in the world, with a value of over $5 billion. The Sultan's collection of Rolls-Royce vehicles is particularly notable, with around 150 cars, and he holds the Guinness World Record for the largest private collection of Rolls-Royce cars.
The Sultan's collection includes the Rolls-Royce Phantom VI, a British limousine produced from 1968 to 1990. This car was commonly used by the British monarchy and was owned by Queen Elizabeth II until her death in 2022. The Phantom VI was the last Rolls-Royce with a separate chassis and featured a powerful V8 engine. The Sultan of Brunei custom-ordered four of these cars, named the Rolls-Royce Cloudesque, which were modernised versions of the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud.
The Phantom VI was a highly exclusive model, with only 18 Phantom IVs ever built between 1950 and 1956, and these were sold only to royalty and heads of state. The Phantom IV was a large and expensive car, with a powerful engine and an additional cross-member at the centre of the cruciform bracing. It was designed as a state limousine for ceremonial and parade use and featured a unique straight-8 engine, allowing it to run at low speeds for long distances.
The Phantom VI was a continuation of the prestigious Phantom series, with the Phantom III production ending in 1939. The Phantom IV was a surprise addition to the series, as the hardships of World War II and the subsequent lack of spending power made a successor to the Phantom III seem unlikely. However, the British royal family's order for a state limousine changed this, and Rolls-Royce was honoured to build a car for the royal family of its home country.
The Phantom IV was an extremely exclusive car, not just available to those with sufficient funds. It was designed for royalty and heads of state, with only a few special dignitaries around the world able to acquire one. The Phantom IV was the epitome of prestige and rarity, and its presence instantly commanded attention.
The Sultan of Brunei's collection of Rolls-Royce vehicles, including the Phantom VI, showcases his passion for luxury and unique automobiles. With his extensive collection, the Sultan has played a significant role in supporting car manufacturers like Rolls-Royce and Bentley during their challenging periods.
