The history of Piqua

In 1780, during the American Revolutionary War, the original Shawnee village of Piqua, near present-day Springfield, was destroyed by George Rogers Clark and his Kentucky volunteers. The Shawnee then moved to the present site of Piqua, where they established two settlements, Upper and Lower Piqua. In 1793, General "Mad" Anthony Wayne built Fort Piqua near Upper Piqua, and from there, the Shawnee chief Tecumseh departed in 1796 for the headwaters of the Whitewater in Indiana. A town called Washington was subsequently laid out on the site in 1807.

Renamed Piqua in 1816, the city developed as a flatboat river port, trading goods such as corn, flour, bacon, flax, and linseed oil. Piqua was incorporated in 1823 and became a bustling hub of retail shops, taverns, public halls, and mills during the 1820s and 1830s. The completion of the Miami and Erie Canal in 1837 and the arrival of the railroads in the 1850s further propelled its growth as an industrial community.

Piqua has a rich history of textile mills and was once known as the "underwear capital of the world." From the late 1880s to the mid-1980s, fifteen different companies manufactured underwear and knitwear in the city, employing local women and contributing significantly to the local economy. The city also boasts a notable past in nuclear power, being home to the nation's first municipally owned atomic power plant, which operated from 1963 to 1966.

Today, Piqua offers downtown walking tours, with a 23-block section of the downtown listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The city takes pride in its preservation efforts, including the ongoing restoration of the Fort Piqua Hotel, built in 1891, which has played host to several notable figures throughout its history.
