The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC)
The ARTC was established in 1998 following a major rail reform package announced by the Australian Government in 1996. The package included the sale of government-owned train operators Australian National and National Rail, and the creation of the ARTC to manage the sections of the interstate rail network previously controlled by these two organisations. The ARTC continues to expand its network through major infrastructure projects, including Inland Rail, a new 1,700 km freight line that will complete Australia's national freight network.
The ARTC is responsible for managing and maintaining the infrastructure of its network, including tracks, signals, and bridges. It does not operate any trains directly but provides access to its network to train operators through wholesale access agreements. The ARTC has signed long-term lease agreements with various state governments and rail infrastructure companies to expand its network and improve coordination and efficiency. For example, in 2001, the ARTC was granted rights to sell access between Kalgoorlie and Kwinana, Perth, to interstate rail operators under an agreement with Arc Infrastructure. In 2004, the New South Wales Government leased its interstate and Hunter Valley lines to the ARTC for 60 years, and the Rail Infrastructure Corporation contracted the operational responsibility of its country branch lines to the ARTC.
The ARTC is an unlisted public company limited by shares and is incorporated under the Corporations Act. It is wholly owned by the Australian Government, represented by the Minister for Finance and the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development. The ARTC operates as a Commonwealth Company under the PGPA Act and has adopted a constitution that outlines its obligations and requirements, including complying with the GBE Guidelines and general policies of the Commonwealth.

Queensland Rail
In addition to its urban and interurban offerings, Queensland Rail also operates five long-distance passenger rail services under the brand name Queensland Rail Traveltrain. These services include the Westlander, Inlander, Spirit of Queensland, Spirit of the Outback, and the Brisbane Express. Connecting road coach services are also available. In the 2022-23 fiscal year, annual patronage for all travel and tourism services was 690,000.
Historically, Queensland Rail was built by the Queensland Government to the unusual (for the time) gauge of 1,067 mm (3 ft 6 in). The initial section of the railway, called the Main Line, opened on July 31, 1865, between Ipswich and Bigge's Camp at the eastern base of the Little Liverpool Range. The line was then extended to Toowoomba in 1867, with the ascent of the Main Range requiring the adoption of narrow gauge.
In more recent years, Queensland Rail has undergone several changes and expansions. In 1999, the company was rebranded as QR. In 2002, Queensland Rail expanded beyond its state borders by purchasing Northern Rivers Railroad and rebranding it as Interail. The company further expanded its operations in 2003 by entering the Hunter Valley coal market and securing additional coal contracts. From 2002 onwards, Queensland Rail operated interstate services under the Australian Railroad Group, Interail, and QR National brands.
In 2009, the Queensland Government announced the privatisation of Queensland Rail's freight business, leading to the transfer of freight assets to QR National (now known as Aurizon) in 2010. In 2013, the Queensland Parliament passed the Queensland Rail Transit Authority Bill 2013, restructuring Queensland Rail. As a result, Queensland Rail Limited remained as an entity but was no longer a government-owned corporation, becoming a subsidiary of the new Queensland Rail Transit Authority (QRTA).

The XPT has a maximum service speed of 160 km/h (100 mph), and set an Australian speed record in 1992 when it reached 193 km/h (120 mph) in a test run. Sydney Metro's North West Line
The Sydney Metro Northwest, previously known as the North West Rail Link, is a significant public transport project in Australia. The line has had a long and complex planning history, with the proposal being announced, cancelled, and re-announced multiple times since the 1990s.
