Rutgers Business School's history

Rutgers Business School has a rich history in the state of New Jersey, with roots stretching back to 1929 when it was founded as the Seth Boyden School of Business. It opened its doors at 40 Rector Street in Newark, sharing a space with the New Jersey Law School and Dana College. The school's early years were marked by a focus on business administration, offering a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration as its sole degree.

In the 1930s and '40s, the school underwent a series of name changes and affiliations. In 1934, it became part of the newly established University of Newark and was renamed the School of Business Administration. This was followed by accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) in 1941, solidifying its reputation for academic excellence. In 1946, the school merged with other colleges to become part of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.

The 1950s and '60s brought expansion and a shift in focus for RBS. The school launched its Master of Business Administration degree program in 1950 and introduced a Master's in Public Accounting in 1956, the first of its kind in the nation. During this time, the graduate student population surpassed undergraduate enrolment, leading to the decision to discontinue the undergraduate program and concentrate solely on graduate education. In the 1990s, Rutgers continued to refine its academic structure.
