It is located along the southeastern coast, approximately 250 km (160 mi) north of the state capital, Brisbane, within the Fraser Coast Region local council area. The island is part of the Butchulla people's traditional lands and was named "K'gari", meaning 'paradise'.

In the 1950s, sand mining leases were granted, and mining continued until 1977, despite opposition from the Fraser Island Defenders Organisation (FIDO) and submissions from the public. Eventually, the Fraser government halted mining on the island by cancelling the mining company's mineral export licence.

The island has a rich Aboriginal history, with evidence of habitation dating back at least 35,000 years. The Aboriginal population on the island campaigned against their Commandant, Henry Jeanneret, in 1847, resulting in the relocation of the remaining 47 Aboriginal people to Oyster Cove Station.
