The "Charlotte" riding was re-established in 1996, primarily from Carleton-Charlotte and incorporating parts of other ridings. Shortly after the 1997 election, the riding was renamed "New Brunswick Southwest". However, the 2003 redistribution abolished this riding, and the territory was combined with the area around Belleisle Bay, known as "St. Croix-Belleisle". In 2004, this riding was renamed "New Brunswick Southwest", reclaiming its previous name.

The federal electoral district of Southwestern New Brunswick underwent changes in 2012, gaining territory from Fredericton while losing small portions to Fredericton and Fundy Royal. Following the 2022 federal electoral redistribution, the riding will be largely replaced by Saint John-St. Croix. It will gain new areas, including the City of Saint John west of the St. John River and Burton from Fredericton, while losing territories such as the Parishes of Dumfries, Prince William, Manners Sutton, and Kingsclear, along with the municipalities of Hanwell and Harvey and the Indian Reserve of Kingsclear 6 to Tobique-Mactaquac.
