Palanca Negra is Angola's national symbol

Palanca Negra Gigante, also known as the giant sable antelope or royal sable antelope, is a large, rare subspecies of the sable antelope native to Angola. It is considered a national symbol of Angola and is portrayed on numerous stamps, banknotes, and even passports of the nation. The Angola national football team is also known as the Palancas Negras in honour of this antelope.

The giant sable antelope is native to the region between the Cuango and Luando Rivers in Angola and is evaluated as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. As of 2021, they reportedly only have a population of 300, 100 of which are living in the Cangandala National Park.

The giant sable antelope is held in great regard by the people of Angola. This, along with its symbolic significance in African mythology, is believed to be one of the reasons why the animal survived the long civil war in the country. In African mythology, the antelope symbolises vivacity, velocity, beauty, and visual sharpness.

The giant sable antelope is a large, rare subspecies of the sable antelope. Both sexes have horns, which can reach 1.5 meters in length. Males weigh an average of 238 kg (525 lb) with a height of 116–142 cm (46–56 in). Females weigh 220 kg and are slightly shorter than males. The horns are more curved and massive in males, reaching lengths of 81–165 cm (32–65 in), while females' horns are only 61–102 cm (24–40 in) in length.

The Angola Field Group has been instrumental in bringing the latest developments and updates about the Palanca Negra Gigante, Angola's national symbol, from the Cangandala National Park and Luando Special Reserve. Pedro Vaz Pinto, who re-discovered the Palanca Negra Gigante after Angola's 27 years of civil war, heads the Conservation Program to protect this critically endangered animal.
