Schloss Elmau

Following World War II, Müller lost control of Schloss Elmau in 1947, and it became a sanatorium for displaced persons and Holocaust survivors. In 1951, Müller's children acquired the lease for the building and set up a hotel. Soon, Schloss Elmau became primarily known for its cultural events, especially classical music concerts and literary events.

In 2005, a fire destroyed a large part of the building. Dietmar Mueller-Elmau, the grandson of the original builder, then had it rebuilt as a luxury spa and hideaway. Schloss Elmau meets all the logistical and security requirements for a G7 Summit venue. The German government chose it as the location for the 41st G7 Summit in 2015, and again in 2022, marking the second time the summit has been held at the hotel.

Bavarian Alps

The Bavarian Alps, or 'Bayerische Alpen' in German, are a collective name for several mountain ranges of the Northern Limestone Alps within the German state of Bavaria. The term is often used to refer to the part of the Eastern Alps that lies on Bavarian state territory. However, in a narrower sense, it specifically refers to the mountain ranges between the rivers Lech and Saalach (Altbayern), excluding the Allgäu Alps in Swabia and the Berchtesgaden Alps in the east.

The Bavarian Alps are a stunningly beautiful natural divide along the Austrian border. While ranges further south may be higher, the Bavarian Alps are notable for their abrupt rise from the foothills, creating a dramatic impact. The highest peak in the Bavarian Alps and in Germany overall is the Zugspitze, standing at 2,962 metres above sea level.

The Alps have a rich history of human interaction, with evidence of mountain pasture use dating back to 750 BC during the Iron Age. The area has also witnessed the ebb and flow of various animal species over time, with some, like the lynx and the grey wolf, being reintroduced to the region through conservation efforts.

Tourism and winter sports are significant activities in the Bavarian Alps region. Schloss Neuschwanstein, a castle appearing through the mountaintops, served as the model for Disney's Sleeping Beauty castle. Another notable attraction is Schloss Linderhof, a sumptuous palace built by Ludwig II.

The Bavarian Alps also offer a range of outdoor activities, such as hiking and gliding across picturesque lakes like the emerald-green Königssee. The Eagle's Nest, located at 1834 metres above sea level, was built as a mountaintop retreat and provides breathtaking views.

In June 2022, the Bavarian Alps were in the spotlight as the host location for the G7 Summit at Schloss Elmau, a luxury hotel situated about 100 kilometres from Munich. This was the second time the hotel served as the venue for the G7 Summit, the first being in 2015. The scenic backdrop and ability to meet logistical and security requirements made Schloss Elmau an attractive choice for the gathering of world leaders.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen

The G7 Summit is a gathering of the leaders of the Group of Seven, which includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. These countries are considered to have "advanced economies and open societies". The European Union is also represented at the summit, and guest nations are sometimes invited to participate in working sessions.

The 2022 G7 Summit was held at Schloss Elmau, a luxury hotel and spa located in the Bavarian Alps, about 100 kilometres from Munich. The hotel has a long history, dating back to 1916 when it was built by theologian and philosopher Johannes Müller as a "space for personal freedom and communal life", free from ideology. The building has had a varied past, serving as a meeting place for politicians and artists, a military hospital for the US Army, and a sanatorium for displaced persons and Holocaust survivors. Schloss Elmau was rebuilt as a luxury spa and hotel after a fire in 2005.

Ukraine war

The G7 Summit 2022 was held at Schloss Elmau, a luxury hotel in the Bavarian Alps. This was the second time the G7 Summit was held at this location, the first being in 2015. The summit was hosted by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who welcomed leaders from France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, Canada, and the United States.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine and its far-reaching consequences dominated the talks. The G7 leaders pledged to continue supporting Ukraine financially, economically, and politically, as well as with weapons. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the summit via video link, calling for more weapons for Ukraine. The G7 leaders also discussed new sanctions on Moscow to limit its ability to import technologies for its arms industry.

The war in Ukraine has led to a global food crisis, with Russia blocking Ukrainian grain exports, causing hunger and unrest worldwide. G7 countries aim to show they are committed to helping countries worldwide by providing development aid, debt restructuring, and climate finance. They also plan to facilitate grain exports from Ukraine and find alternative energy sources.

The G7 leaders faced the challenge of presenting a united front against Russia while also addressing the global economic crisis. They aimed to signal to Russian President Vladimir Putin that the West will maintain its support for Ukraine despite domestic political pressures. The summit was an opportunity for Chancellor Scholz to showcase strong leadership and unity among the G7 nations.

Climate change protests

The 2022 G7 Summit took place from 26 to 28 June at Schloss Elmau in the Bavarian Alps, Germany. Climate change was a key topic on the agenda for the summit, with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stating that the G7 should take on a "pioneering role" in the pursuit of climate neutrality.

In Munich, around 4,000 people took to the streets the day before the summit, calling on G7 leaders to tackle poverty, climate change, and world hunger. Greenpeace activists also projected a giant peace symbol on top of Waxenstein Mountain near Schloss Elmau, sending a pro-peace and anti-fossil fuel message to the summit participants.

The protests in 2022 were much smaller in scale compared to the 2015 G7 Summit, also held in Schloss Elmau, where tens of thousands of protesters were expected to descend on the nearby town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
