Belize is a parliamentary representative democratic monarchy with a multi-party system. The country's leader is the Prime Minister, who is the head of government. The current Prime Minister of Belize is Johnny Briceño, who has served since 12 November 2020. Briceño is the fifth Belizean politician to hold the office of Prime Minister. He previously served as Deputy Prime Minister from 1998 to 2007 and as Leader of the Opposition from 2008 to 2011 and again from 2016 to 2020. Briceño is a member of the centre-left People's United Party (PUP), which dominates the political landscape alongside the centre-right United Democratic Party (UDP).

In 1996, he became Deputy Party Leader and, in 2008, he was elected Leader of the Opposition. Briceño has also served as Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment and provided assistance to the Prime Minister with international obligations.

The UDP is led by Dean Barrow, who served as Prime Minister of Belize from 2008-2020 and was the country's first black Prime Minister. An attorney by profession, Barrow also served as Belize's deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs from 1993-1998 and was Leader of the Opposition from 1998-2008.
