Chaa Creek's history

Chaa Creek is a luxury resort in Belize, located in the heart of Maya civilization. It was founded in 1981 by Mick and Lucy Fleming, who first visited Belize in 1977. The Flemings bought an overgrown 140-acre farm on the Macal River in the Cayo District, which had no road access. They began producing vegetables and transporting them to the markets of San Ignacio Town by dugout canoe. They also produced milk, yoghurt, cheese, eggs, and had two children.

As other travellers heard about the farm, they would often visit and sometimes stay to help out. The Flemings built a guest cottage from materials found on the land, and Chaa Creek Cottages, Belize's first jungle lodge, opened in 1981. The lodge's guestrooms have since expanded to 23 outstanding cottages, suites, and villas.

In 1983, the British Army Corps of Engineers built the Chaa Creek road, and a dining room was added to cater to the six existing cottage rooms. Electrification in 1987 meant washing machines and deep freezers could be used, and a submersible water pump was installed. In 1988, hot water showers were introduced, and an ice machine was added to make margaritas for guests.

In 1990, all the cottages were upgraded, and nature trails were cut through the forested property, which had expanded to 330 acres. In 1992, Chaa Creek played host to a team of archaeologists who investigated the ancient Maya sites on the property, mapping out over 70 ancient sites. The Chaa Creek Natural History Centre was established in 1995, housing interpretive displays of the local flora, fauna, ecosystems, and geology of Belize, as well as Maya archaeology and anthropology exhibits.

The Macal River Camp was constructed in 1997 to accommodate student groups and budget-conscious travellers. The Spa at Chaa Creek opened in 1999, followed by The Conference Centre in 2000. In 2002, two Tree Top Jacuzzi Suites were built, and in 2003, the Orchard Villa and Sky Room were added. The property expanded to 400 acres in 2004, offering over 10 miles of well-maintained trails for hiking, birding, and horseback riding. Chaa Creek Stables opened in 2005, providing an enhanced equestrian experience for guests.

Today, Chaa Creek continues to be a pioneer in adventure travel to Belize, offering a wide range of activities for guests, including tours of Mayan ruins, helicopter tours, snorkelling, ziplining, cave tubing, and market tours. The resort is also committed to sustainable tourism and responsible travel, with 10% of all accommodation revenue going towards environmental and community projects under the Chaa Creek Cares™ initiative.
