Born on 26 October 1967 in Whangarei, Northland, New Zealand, Keith Lionel Urban is a New Zealand-born Australian singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Urban moved to Queensland, Australia, with his family when he was two years old. At the age of four, he was given a ukulele, and at six, he started playing the guitar. By the time he was eight, Urban was entering and winning talent competitions. As a teenager, he played guitar gigs in pubs and clubs and quit school at 15 to pursue music.
In 1988, Urban formed a band that toured Australia. Two years later, he won an award at an Australian country music festival, which led to a record contract with EMI Music Australia. In 1992, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, and formed a band called The Ranch. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1997 but suffered from poor sales. Urban then developed a medical condition that prevented him from singing, and The Ranch disbanded. While his voice healed, he honed his guitar skills, playing on albums for artists like the Dixie Chicks and Garth Brooks.
In 1999, Urban released his first American solo album, titled 'Keith Urban', and scored a number-one hit on the Billboard country singles chart with "But for the Grace of God". Born David Gordon Kirkpatrick in 1927, Slim Dusty is regarded as one of the fathers of Australian country music. He wrote his first song, "The Way the Cowboy Dies", in 1937 and adopted the stage name "Slim Dusty" in 1938 at the age of 11.
