New Brunswick has a rich and varied sporting history, with sports and athletic activities playing a significant role in the province's culture. The most popular sports in New Brunswick include baseball, basketball, hockey, and football. In 1886, two Black baseball clubs, the Alerts and the Resolutes, played an exhibition match in Saint John, showcasing their talent with "curve" pitchers and displaying their "tasteful uniforms." The Alerts, also known as the Black Stockings or Royals, were from Indiantown in the North End, while the Resolutes represented downtown Saint John. Gaelic football is mainly played on the island of Ireland, although units of the Association exist in Great Britain, mainland Europe, North America, Africa, Asia and Oceania. Outside of Ireland, football is primarily played among members of the Irish diaspora, with notable exceptions in places like France, where it has been growing in popularity, particularly in the Celtic region of Brittany.

In North America, Canadian teams compete in the USGAA North American Championships, hosted in America by the United States Gaelic Athletic Association (USGAA). Gaelic football has been played in North America since the 1890s, with games played in both Canada and the US in 1892. By 1893, more than a dozen clubs had been established in the US, and the first clubs appeared in England in 1896.

Hurling

The sport has a long history in Ireland, dating back to at least the 13th century and possibly earlier. It is said to have been brought over by Irish immigrants to North America, including New Brunswick, in the 1700s and 1800s. References to hurling in modern-day Canada and New York City date from the 1780s, and the game was played by Irish immigrants in San Francisco, Hoboken, and New York City in the 1850s. The first game of hurling played under Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) rules outside of Ireland was in Boston in 1886.

In the traditional form of the game, the players use the hurley to strike the sliotar, which can be caught in the hand and carried for up to four steps, or hit in the air or on the ground. The ball can also be kicked or slapped with an open hand for short-range passing. Players are allowed to make shoulder-to-shoulder contact with opponents who are in possession of the ball or moving towards it, provided they have at least one foot on the ground. Hurling is played on a rectangular pitch similar in size to a rugby pitch, with H-shaped goalposts at each end. Each team has fifteen players, including a goalkeeper.

As of 2010, new rules were introduced to mandate the wearing of plastic protective helmets with faceguards for all players, regardless of age. This was implemented to reduce the number of injuries, as hurling is known for being a physically intense sport. Despite the addition of helmets, the game retains its fast-paced and intense nature, with players achieving impressive speeds and distances with their strikes.

Rowing

One of the clubs supported by Rowing NB is the Kennebecasis Rowing Club, which is located on the Kennebecasis River. The club offers a range of rowing programs for all ages and skill levels, from beginners to those competing at international regattas. The river provides a scenic backdrop for rowing, with destinations such as The Rothesay Marina, Minister's Face, Drury Cove, Kennebecasis Park and Long Island.

The University of New Brunswick also has a rowing team, the UNB REDS, who train and compete year-round in the Canadian University Rowing Association and with the Fredericton Rowing Club. The club trains multiple times per week at the Small Crafts & Aquatic Centre/Fredericton Rowing Club, taking part in outdoor competitions in the fall and indoor competitions over winter.
