Rutgers Nb Application Requirements

Rutgers University–New Brunswick has an acceptance rate of 66% and offers a vast catalog of majors to choose from, renowned professors, and opportunities to take part in deeply funded research. The application deadline is rolling, and admissions officials consider a student's GPA a very important factor. Applicants are required to submit a short, original essay and may also submit SAT or ACT scores, though this is not mandatory. Current high school seniors are required to complete the Rutgers Self-Reported Academic Record (SRAR).

Application deadlines

For first-year and transfer students, the first step is to complete and submit your application and required credentials. The Rutgers–New Brunswick community is made up of tens of thousands of students from diverse backgrounds, each seeking to further their academic studies.

The application deadline at Rutgers University–New Brunswick is rolling. However, there are specific dates to take note of. For Spring/January 2024, you may apply after 1 October to be considered under Rolling Admission. Applications submitted after this date will receive a decision after students who applied by 1 October have been notified.

For Fall/September 2024, the same rule applies for applications submitted after the due dates. The Early Action deadline is 1 November, and the Regular Decision deadline is 1 December. If you are an international applicant, you will need to submit an English proficiency test score.

If you are a transfer applicant, interested in spring or summer entry, part-time enrollment, off-campus locations, or online or non-degree study, you should use the traditional Rutgers application.

Required credentials

The credentials required for your application to Rutgers University–New Brunswick will depend on your status as a first-year or transfer applicant, as well as your residency and citizenship status.

First-Year Applicants

First-year applicants are those who are currently enrolled in high school, have graduated from high school and have never attended college, or have been enrolled in college but will have completed fewer than 12 academic post-high school graduation college credits by the time they enrol at Rutgers.

For first-year applicants, the following credentials are required:

• A completed Rutgers Self-Reported Academic Record (SRAR)
• A short, original essay included in the space provided on the application form
• A $70 non-refundable application fee, or a fee waiver
• A GED diploma/certificate and official results, if applicable
• An English proficiency test score for applicants whose secondary schooling has been outside the U.S. in a country where English is not the principal language
• A portfolio, audition, or interview demonstrating artistic talent for applicants to the Mason Gross School of the Arts
• SAT and/or ACT test scores (optional)

Transfer Applicants

Transfer applicants are those who have completed some college or university courses but have not yet completed a degree. The required credentials for transfer applicants are not outlined on the Rutgers University website. However, transfer applicants can apply using the Common App or Rutgers Application, and the application process includes providing academic transcripts and paying an application fee.

International Applicants

International applicants whose secondary schooling has been outside the U.S. in a country where English is not the principal language are required to submit an English proficiency test score. The Rutgers website does not specify whether additional credentials are required for international applicants. However, international applicants can apply using the Common App or Rutgers Application, and the application process includes providing academic transcripts and paying an application fee.

Application fees

Rutgers University–New Brunswick requires a $70 non-refundable application fee for both the Rutgers Application and Common App. This fee must be paid before your application will be considered complete and ready for review.

There are several ways to pay the application fee. You can use the secure payment gateway to pay with a valid credit card when you submit your online application. Alternatively, you can pay the fee online with a credit card via the link on your Rutgers CommunityID account, but only after 24-72 hours have passed since you submitted the application. You can also mail a check made payable to "Rutgers University," including your full name and RUID.

Official fee waivers are available for students who participate in the National School Lunch Program, are currently serving in the U.S. Military, are Military Veterans, or Military Dependents who plan to apply for educational benefits under the GI Bill. Rutgers also accepts official College Board, NACAC, ACT, and EOF fee waivers.

If you are currently in high school and paying the application fee would be a financial hardship, you can see your high school counsellor for an official waiver. If you have already graduated from high school, you can ask a social service agency or another third party familiar with your financial situation to provide a letter requesting a waiver.

After accepting an offer of admission, you must pay a non-refundable $150 acceptance fee through your Rutgers Application Portal.

English proficiency

Rutgers University requires all applicants whose secondary schooling has been outside the US in a country where English is not the principal language to demonstrate English proficiency. This is the case regardless of US residency or citizenship status.

To demonstrate English proficiency, applicants must take an English proficiency test. The following tests are accepted by Rutgers:

• TOEFL (internet-based test)
• International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
• Michigan English Test (MET)
• SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing
• Duolingo English Test
• TOEFL IBT Home Edition
• TOEFL ITP Plus China
• Cambridge Assessment Test

The Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy and Rutgers School of Nursing require scores of 100 on the internet-based TOEFL test. The minimum score for these schools is 130. As of January 1, 2024, the minimum IELTS score for Rutgers University–Newark is 6.5.

Score reports must be from tests taken within the past two years and submitted directly to Rutgers from the testing service. English proficiency examination requirements may be waived for students who have attended an English-medium school. Students will be evaluated for a waiver on a case-by-case basis.

Standardized testing

Rutgers University–New Brunswick is test-optional. This means that the SAT and ACT test submissions are optional for undergraduate applicants. If you feel your standardized test scores will benefit you in the admissions process, you are encouraged to submit them. If you are unable to submit a test score, or choose not to, you will still receive full admission consideration.

However, if you have an Evidence-based reading and writing (EBRW) SAT score of 650 or higher, or an ACT reading score of 32 or higher, you will be exempt from taking the English placement exam. These exemptions are only granted if scores have been sent to Rutgers.

All SAT and ACT scores must be sent directly from the testing agency to Rutgers. Unofficial test scores cannot be accepted. The SAT essay and ACT writing component are not required. When requesting scores, use the SAT code 2765 or the ACT code 2592. It is recommended that you include Rutgers as a receiving institution when registering for the SAT and/or ACT.

If you are unable to, or choose not to, submit SAT or ACT scores, you will not be disadvantaged in the application review process. Students are urged not to compromise their health and safety to take a standardized test. Your application will be considered on the basis of the other important credentials you have presented that demonstrate your promise and potential.

If you are an international applicant, an English proficiency test score is required if your secondary schooling has been outside the U.S. in a country where English is not the principal language, regardless of U.S. residency or citizenship.
