South Brunswick's Congressional District

South Brunswick is in New Jersey's 12th Congressional District, which is represented by Democrat Bonnie Watson Coleman, who has served in Congress since 2015. The district is primarily suburban and covers portions of Mercer, Somerset, Union, and Middlesex counties. It is known for its research centres and educational institutions, including Princeton University, Rider University, and The College of New Jersey.

New Jersey's 12th congressional district

The 12th congressional district has a long history dating back to its creation in 1913 based on redistricting following the 1910 United States census. Historically, the district had been a swing district, but it has become more Democratic-leaning in recent years. The current representative, Bonnie Watson Coleman, is the first African-American woman elected to Congress from New Jersey.

The district is well-known for its impressive educational and research institutions. In addition to those mentioned above, it is also home to Johnson & Johnson and Bristol-Myers Squibb. The district has a strong economy, with dynamic businesses and a thriving educational and healthcare corridor.

Democrat Bonnie Watson Coleman

Watson Coleman was born in Camden, New Jersey, in 1945. Her father, John S. Watson, served six terms in the New Jersey legislature. She graduated from Ewing High School and received a B.A. from Thomas Edison State College in 1985.

Prior to her election to Congress, Watson Coleman served in the New Jersey General Assembly from 1998 to 2015, representing the 15th legislative district. She was the first woman to chair the Democratic Party of New Jersey, holding the position from 2002 to 2006. She also served as Majority Leader of the New Jersey General Assembly from 2006 to 2010.

In Congress, Watson Coleman has been a member of several committees, including the Committee on Appropriations, Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies, and Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies. She has also been a strong supporter of programs allowing criminal offenders to reenter society.

In 2020, Watson Coleman co-signed a letter condemning Azerbaijan’s offensive operations against the Armenian-populated enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh and calling for an immediate ceasefire. She also voted against a House resolution opposing efforts to boycott the State of Israel.

In January 2021, Watson Coleman tested positive for COVID-19, which she believed she contracted from Republican colleagues who refused to wear masks while they sheltered together during the 2021 storming of the Capitol.

Following the redistricting process in 2021, the 6th district remained largely similar to its previous configuration but gained the liberal towns of Neptune Township and Red Bank while losing the more conservative Marlboro Township, among other minor changes. The district became slightly more Democratic after redistricting, according to estimates from The Cook Political Report.

Democrat Frank Pallone

Frank Pallone was born in October 1951 in Long Branch, New Jersey, and is a graduate of Middlebury College, The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, and Rutgers School of Law–Camden. Before being elected to the House, he was a member of the Long Branch City Council from 1982 to 1988 and a member of the New Jersey Senate from the 11th district from 1984 to 1988.
