New Brunswick, New Jersey, has a rich history that dates back to the mid-17th century. Initially, the area was a Native American village in a dense cedar forest with swampland along the Raritan River. The first recorded European inhabitant was Daniel Cooper, who operated a ferry purchased later by John Inian. In 1681, Inian bought two lots from the Leni-Lenape tribe, containing around 1280 acres of land. This was the first land purchase in what is now New Brunswick.

In the 1700s, John Inian envisioned an expanding transit system and bought ferry rights on the river. Around 1713, the area became known as Inian's Ferry. In 1724, the town was renamed New Brunswick in honour of King George I, the Duke of Brunswick. The city was officially incorporated in 1730, two weeks before New York City. During this time, there was a large Dutch immigration from Albany, New York, settling on what would later become Albany Street.

New Brunswick played a significant role in the Revolutionary War. The city was an important crossroads between Philadelphia/Trenton and New York City. One notable event was George Washington's passage through New Brunswick on June 24, 1775, en route to taking command of the Continental (American) Army in Cambridge, Massachusetts. During the American troops' retreat across New Jersey from Fort Lee, Washington used Cochrane's Tavern in New Brunswick as his headquarters from November 29 to December 1, 1776. On December 1, Alexander Hamilton's artillery battery provided cover for Washington's troops as they continued their retreat, engaging in an artillery duel with the British across the Raritan River.

After the Battle of Monmouth in 1778, General George Washington and the Continental Army stayed in New Brunswick from July 2 to July 7. During this time, the first sittings of the court-martial of General Charles Lee for his conduct at the Battle of Monmouth took place at the White Hall Tavern.

New Brunswick's role in the Revolutionary War extended beyond military engagements. The city was also a centre for political activity, with several significant meetings and events taking place there. The early readings of the Declaration of Independence also occurred in New Brunswick, at the foot of the church tower of Christ Church on July 9, 1776.
