The airline's history
Malaysia Airlines, or MAS, has had a long and complex history, with several name changes and expansions over the years. The airline was founded in 1937 in Singapore as Malayan Airways Limited. The airline's first commercial flight took off on April 2, 1947, from Singapore to Penang, with stops in Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh. At the time, the airline was jointly controlled by intercontinental carriers BOAC and Qantas.
In 1960, the airline launched its first long-haul international flight to Hong Kong with an 84-seat Bristol Britannia aircraft. When Malaya, Singapore, Sabah, and Sarawak formed Malaysia in 1963, the airline's name was changed to Malaysian Airways. However, in 1965, Singapore separated from Malaysia, and the airline was renamed Malaysia-Singapore Airlines (MSA).
In 1972, the two countries decided to establish their own flag carriers, and MSA was split into Malaysian Airline System (MAS) and Singapore Airlines. MAS continued to focus on regional destinations within Malaysia, while Singapore Airlines pursued an international route network.
