History of Isle of Palms, SC
The Isle of Palms, a city in Charleston County, South Carolina, is a unique coastal barrier island. It is located just north of historic Charleston and nearby Sullivan's Island. The island is 7 miles long and 1 mile wide, with 6 miles of white, sandy beaches. It is renowned as a world-class vacation destination, with pristine beaches, clean water, natural wildlife, world-class resorts, spas, golf courses, and delightful restaurants.
The Isle of Palms was originally named Hunting Island and then Long Island. It is thought to be at least 25,000 years old, with the indigenous Seewee Indians believed to be its first inhabitants. The Seewees were said to have greeted the first English settlers by swimming to their ships and carrying the travellers to shore. Inspired by the contributions of the English, some Seewees attempted to reach England in their canoes but were lost at sea in storms.
During the Revolutionary War, a British Army contingent of 2,500 men tried to raid a colonial encampment on the adjacent Sullivan's Island. The attack failed when the force attempted to cross the treacherous waters of the Breach Inlet between the two islands, resulting in the drowning of many men.
The Isle of Palms also holds significance in the Civil War as the point of departure for the CSS Hunley, the first submarine to sink an enemy vessel. After successfully sinking the USS Housatonic, the Hunley and her crew were lost at sea, likely due to the encounter with the Union ship. The wreck of the Hunley was recently discovered offshore of Sullivan's Island and will be recovered for posterity.
In 1899, the island was purchased by J.S. Lawrence, who renamed it the Isle of Palms. The first permanent accommodations were established in 1906 with the construction of a 50-room resort hotel. In 1912, James Sottile built a spacious beach pavilion and an amusement park with a Ferris wheel. Transportation developments enabled residents of Charleston to travel to the island via ferry and rail trolley car. Access was further improved in 1929 with the construction of the Grace Memorial Bridge, replacing the ferry across the Charleston harbor.
In 1946, a bridge link to the islands was established, and most of the Isle of Palms was purchased by developer J.C. Long of The Beach Company. J.C. Long provided low-cost housing to veterans returning from World War II, and the island slowly developed into a residential community of greater Charleston. In the 1970s, real estate development blossomed, with the Sea Pines Co. establishing a resort enterprise on 900 acres of land at the island's northeast end.
Despite the changes over the years, the Isle of Palms retains its serenity and natural beauty, offering a peaceful getaway for residents and visitors alike.
