Australia Zoo is located on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia, an hour north of Brisbane. The zoo is spread across 110 acres of on-display habitats, with a 1,300-square-metre wildlife hospital next to it. The zoo is owned by Terri Irwin, the widow of Steve Irwin, whose wildlife documentary series "The Crocodile Hunter" and his family's new show "Crikey! It's the Irwins" made the zoo a popular tourist attraction. The zoo was originally opened by Bob and Lyn Irwin, Steve's parents, on 3 June 1970, under the name Beerwah Reptile and Fauna Park. The park was home to native wildlife such as lace monitors, tiger snakes, freshwater crocodiles, magpie geese, and kangaroos. Lyn Irwin, Steve's mother, was skilled in nursing injured and orphaned animals.
In 1982, the park was renamed the Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park, and the area was doubled to four acres. In 1991, Steve took over the management of the park and, shortly after, he met Terri Raines when she visited the park. The couple married in 1992 and embarked on a crocodile rescue mission, filming this experience as the first episode of "The Crocodile Hunter" documentary series. As filming generated extra funds, Steve and Terri put all the money raised from filming and merchandise into conservation and building new exhibits.
In the 1990s, Bob and Lyn retired, and Steve and Terri changed the name of their growing wildlife park to Australia Zoo. The zoo also expanded with the creation of a management team and the hiring of around 50 staff. In 2004, the Australian Animal Hospital was opened next to the zoo to help with animal care and rehabilitation. The hospital was built in an old avocado packing shed and was dedicated to Lyn. In 2006, Steve Irwin passed away in an accident while snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef.
