Military Aircraft

The Austrian Air Force, or Österreichische Luftstreitkräfte, was formed in 1955, shortly before the country declared its neutrality. The Austrian State Treaty of 1955 committed Austria to permanent neutrality. The Austrian Air Force is a component part of the Austrian Armed Forces.

Early Days

Initially, the Kommando Luftstreitkräfte (Austria's aviation division) used Yak-11 Moose and Yak-18 Max aircraft, which were abandoned by Soviet troops. Twenty-two Cessna L-19A Bird Dog observation and liaison aircraft were then purchased from US forces based in Austria.

Saab Years

In the early 1960s, Austria purchased 30 Saab 29 Tunnan second-hand from the Swedish Air Force. From 1970, the country bought 40 Saab 105 lightweight multi-role aircraft for deployment in trainer, reconnaissance, interception and ground attack roles. However, these sub-sonic jets proved inadequate for air combat and airspace interdiction.

Draken Era

In the 1980s, Austria purchased 28 reconditioned Saab 35 Draken fighter jets to replace the Saab 105 as the Austrian Air Force's main interceptor. The Saab 105 remained in service as a trainer/surveillance aircraft. The Draken jets saw their first major use during the Yugoslav Wars in the 1990s, when Yugoslav MiG-21 fighters crossed the Austrian border without permission. This led to the Austrian Parliament voting to amend the country's ban on operating guided missile systems, and AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles were ordered from Sweden.

Eurofighter Typhoon
