Hamilton's wall crash
Lewis Hamilton crashed his Mercedes during qualifying for the sprint race at the Austrian Grand Prix on Friday. Hamilton and his teammate George Russell were both in contention for the top positions, if not pole, in qualifying, but both crashed out in the final Q3 portion, ending Mercedes' hopes. Hamilton went off into the barriers at Turn 7, and straight after that, Russell spun off at the final corner.
Hamilton's crash occurred on his third flying lap of Q3 after backing out of his first two efforts. He was on a personal best before the uncharacteristic mistake. The back end of his Mercedes stepped out going through Turn 7, with Hamilton powerless to stop himself from slamming into the barriers, causing significant front-end damage to his W13. Hamilton himself said that he swapped the back end in Turn 7 and that was that.
Hamilton walked away from the incident unharmed but disappointed. He said he was incredibly disappointed and so sorry to the team as everyone had worked so hard to put this car together. He added that he never likes to bring it back damaged and that they were fighting for a top-three. Despite the crash, Hamilton was encouraged by the turn of pace he had shown in qualifying, saying:
> "I’m encouraged of course by our performance, it’s just we weren’t expecting to be as close as that today, so that’s a positive from the team – but I’m really quite far back. I don’t know what’s possible from there, but we have a Sprint race as well tomorrow, so I hope I can make up some lost time."
Hamilton's crash was met with cheering from a partisan Spielberg crowd, many of whom were coated in orange in support of Verstappen. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said that Hamilton and Russell "should never beat themselves up" over crashing out, taking heart from the pace displayed through qualifying.

Perez's investigation
Perez is under investigation for breaching track limits at Turn 8 during the qualifying session of the F1 Austrian Grand Prix. The qualifying round, which took place on a Friday, was followed by a single practice session before the Sprint race.
The investigation centres around Perez's driving at Turn 8, a particularly challenging section of the track. Turn 8 is known for its high-speed entry and tight apex, requiring drivers to carefully balance speed and precision. Even minor infractions of track limits can have significant consequences, as they may provide a competitive advantage or compromise safety.
Perez's team, Red Bull, will likely be closely involved in the investigation process, providing data and evidence to support their driver. The team has a strong history at the Red Bull Ring, with Max Verstappen, Perez's teammate, consistently performing well at the Austrian Grand Prix. However, with the team facing stiff competition from Ferrari and Mercedes, any penalties arising from the investigation could impact their overall strategy and chances of victory.
The outcome of Perez's investigation remains to be seen, but it underscores the intense scrutiny and marginal gains that can define Formula 1 racing. With the Austrian Grand Prix already shaping up to be a thrilling contest, the investigation adds another layer of intrigue to the race weekend.
