To protect and preserve this fragile ecosystem, several conservation efforts have been implemented, including the establishment of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System (BBRRS), which comprises seven protected areas covering approximately 12% of the entire reef complex. Despite these protective measures, the reef remains under threat from oceanic pollution, uncontrolled tourism, shipping, and fishing.
