Railroad service in New Brunswick began on 1st January 1838, with the extension of the New Jersey Railroad from East Brunswick (now known as Highland Park) over the Raritan River. The current station, built in 1903, opened on 28th September 1904 for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The predecessor of the Pennsylvania Railroad, the New Jersey Railroad, provided train service to New Brunswick starting in 1838 northbound and 1839 southbound.
