Belize is a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary democracy

The National Assembly of Belize is a bicameral body, consisting of a House of Representatives and a Senate. The 31 members of the House of Representatives are popularly elected to a maximum five-year term of office. The Senate comprises 12 members who are appointed by the governor-general. The Senate is responsible for debating and approving bills passed by the House. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the Parliament of Belize.

Belize's political system is dominated by the centre-left People's United Party and the centre-right United Democratic Party. The country has experienced regular rotations of power through competitive elections, with the two parties fairly regularly transferring power since 1984. The most recent election, in November 2020, was won by the opposition People's United Party, led by Johnny Briceño.

It has a diverse population, with Mestizos making up the largest ethnic group

Mestizos are people of mixed Indigenous (mostly Maya) and European (Spanish and British) descent. The Mestizo population in Belize has its origins in the Caste War of the 1840s, when thousands of Mayas rose up against colonial rule in neighbouring Yucatán, Mexico. As a result, many Mayas fled across the border into British-controlled Belize. The Mestizos brought Catholicism and the Spanish language to the country and have significantly influenced Belize's culture and society.

In addition to the Mestizos, other significant ethnic groups in Belize include Creoles (25.9%), Maya (11.3%), Garifuna (6.1%), East Indians (3.9%), and Mennonites (3.6%). The diverse population of Belize continued to grow and evolve, with the former slaves and their descendants playing a significant role in the country's history and politics.

Belize, known as British Honduras until 1973, was the last British colony on the American mainland. It achieved independence on September 21, 1981, becoming a member of the Commonwealth with King Charles III as its monarch and head of state. Despite gaining independence, Belize has retained cultural and institutional ties to both the United Kingdom and the Caribbean region.
