The island was named after colonial aristocrat Captain Louis Hope
Hope Island is a suburb in the City of Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. The island was named after colonial aristocrat Captain Louis Hope, who played a significant role in the development of the sugar industry in Queensland.
Captain Louis Hope was born in 1817 in Linlithgow, Scotland, to General John Hope, the 4th Earl of Hopetoun, and his wife, Louisa Dorothea. In 1843, he arrived in New South Wales and later moved to Moreton Bay in 1848. Hope became a prominent figure in the establishment of the colony's sugar industry. He purchased land at Ormiston in 1853, where he established the Ormiston House Estate. In addition to his own estate, Hope acquired land at Norman Park, amounting to 364 housing lots. Along with Robert Ramsay, he also took over Kilcoy Station, becoming its sole owner in 1863.
Hope's contributions to the sugar industry extended beyond his own plantations. He supplied plants for experiments conducted by John Buhôt and provided cuttings for plantations in the Oxley district. Additionally, he advised another pioneer in the sugar industry, Claudius Whish. Recognizing his significant contributions, Hope was granted land at the mouth of the Coomera River in 1867. This land, known then as Boykambil, would become Hope Island.
While Hope did not reside on the island that bore his name, his legacy is intertwined with its history. The development of sugar plantations on the island was undertaken by the Grimes Family, who established 'Rockholm'. By the 20th century, the sugar and arrowroot plantation had changed hands, passing to the Sheehan and Davidson families. Today, Hope Island is a thriving suburb, known for its upmarket resort, golf courses, and waterfront shopping and dining precincts.
