Chauncey's history as an industrial city

In 1838, Elihu Chauncey and Nicholas Biddle, capitalists from Philadelphia, moved to southeastern Ohio. The area became known for its salt production, with the first salt well on Bailey Run Road. The salt industry provided enough profits to develop housing and a hotel in the area.
