What You'll Learn

Admont Abbey
The abbey's location borders the mountainous Gesäuse National Park, with the name Admont derived from the Latin expression "ad montes", meaning "at the mountains". The present church, inspired by Regensburg Cathedral, was designed by Wilhelm Bücher and built after the fire of 1865, which destroyed almost the entire monastery. The church is the first sacred building in Austria in the Neo-Gothic style, with 12th-century Romanesque side doors and two 67-metre-tall west towers. The interior consists of a central aisle and two side aisles, each with five side chapels and six altars.
In addition to its library, Admont Abbey is also known for its collection of contemporary art, primarily by young Austrian artists, as well as its long-established scientific collection. The community at the abbey consists of over 27 monks under Abbot Bruno Hubl, and the abbey is responsible for 27 parishes, a secondary school with approximately 600 students, and a senior citizen's home in Frauenberg. The abbey's various businesses and enterprises employ about 500 people.
