Station Pier has a long and fascinating history, dating back to 1854 when it became Victoria's most important arrival point for migrants. For millions of people, stepping onto the pier was their first memory of Melbourne, making it a place filled with hopes, fears, joys, and sorrows. The arrival of a ship at the pier was a festive and emotional occasion, with colourful streamers flying through the air and teeming crowds of well-wishers and relatives. Migrants, dressed in their Sunday best, would eagerly lean over the ship rails, searching for loved ones among the crowd.
The pier was originally built with five railway sidings and a passenger platform on the southern side, known as the 'Bay Excursion Platform'. In 1921, electric passenger services were introduced to the platform, but they were discontinued in 1930 due to financial reasons. In 1933, passenger services were again extended to the pier but only when overseas liners were berthed. The Boat Train service, introduced in 1936, provided a direct link from Flinders Street Station to Station Pier, but this service was also short-lived, ending in October 1939.
In 1934, the Victorian Centenary Bridge was constructed over the railway lines, providing road access to the centre of the pier. However, the overhead wiring and railway lines were eventually removed, and in 1987, the tram route 109 replaced the railway line. The Centenary Bridge was demolished in 1991.
Today, the pier has been redeveloped to include a boardwalk and several restaurants and cafes. It operates 24 hours a day and is open for pedestrian access from 6 am to 9 pm, except when cruise ships or naval ships are visiting.
