What You'll Learn

Queensland State General Election
Queensland has compulsory voting and uses full-preference preferential voting for single-member electorates. The election is conducted by the Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ). The party or coalition that wins the majority of seats (at least 47) forms the government. If no party or coalition wins a majority, the one that is able to command the confidence of the Legislative Assembly forms a minority government. The party or coalition that wins the second-highest number of seats forms the opposition, and the remaining parties and independent candidates are allocated to the cross bench.
The Queensland Parliament is the only unicameral parliament in Australia, composed of the Legislative Assembly. The upper house, the Legislative Council, was abolished in 1922. The Queensland state election is held to elect all members to the Legislative Assembly of Queensland pursuant to the Constitution (Fixed Term Parliament) Amendment Act 2015. As a result of the 2016 Queensland term length referendum, the term of the parliament will run for four years.
The 2024 Queensland state general election was held on Saturday, 26 October 2024. The election period officially commenced the day after the issue of the writ by Her Excellency the Governor of Queensland, in accordance with the Electoral Act 1992. The issue of the writ took place on Tuesday, 1 October 2024. The candidate nominations period was from Wednesday, 2 October to Tuesday, 8 October 2024, at 12 pm local time. The early voting period was from Monday, 14 October to Friday, 25 October 2024, from 8 am to 6 pm (excluding the weekend). Postal vote applications closed on Monday, 14 October 2024, at 7 pm, and postal votes had to be completed by 6 pm on election day. The ECQ must receive postal votes by Tuesday, 5 November 2024, for them to be counted. Telephone voting was also available during this period, and mobile voting was provided to voters in certain locations such as aged care facilities.
Local councils determine the rules for election signage and advertising next to local roads, on private property, and on some state-controlled roads in their area. Election signage and advertising on state-controlled roads are regulated by the Department of Transport and Main Roads. The ECQ regulates signage within 100 metres of polling places during early voting and on election day.

South Australian state elections
In South Australia, state elections are held on the third Saturday in March every four years. The most recent state election was held on Saturday, March 19, 2022, where the South Australian Labor Party, led by Peter Malinauskas, won the government. The party gained eight seats, resulting in a four-seat majority in the House of Assembly.
The Electoral Commission of South Australia (ECSA) is responsible for conducting state and council elections. Following each election, a redistribution is required, which was finalised by the South Australian Electoral Districts Boundaries Commission in December 2024.
The Electoral Act 1985 requires that, for a general election, the writ be issued 28 days before the date fixed for polling. The writ sets the dates for the close of the electoral roll and nominations for an election. The electoral roll is closed six days after the issue of the writ, and the close of nominations occurs three days after that.
In addition to state elections, South Australia also holds whole-of-state council elections (called periodic elections) every four years for its 68 councils. The Municipal Council of Roxby Downs operates under its own administration and does not fall under the periodic elections. These council elections are conducted by ECSA, and the next one will take place in November 2026.
By-elections can also occur at any time when a seat in the House of Assembly becomes vacant. These are usually held due to death, illness, resignation, or other circumstances.

Victoria has fixed terms, with all elections since the 2006 election held every four years on the last Saturday of November. The election date is set as per the Electoral Act 2002. However, if Parliament is unexpectedly dissolved beforehand, the election date may change.
The people elected are called Members of Parliament (MPs). There are 88 MPs in the Lower House, one for each district in Victoria. The party or coalition with majority support in the Lower House forms the Victorian Government. There are 40 MPs in the Upper House, with 5 MPs representing each of Victoria's eight regions. Upper House MPs review the legislation that has been passed by Lower House MPs.
The 2022 Victorian state election was held on Saturday, 26 November 2022, to elect the 60th Parliament of Victoria. All 88 seats in the Legislative Assembly (Lower House) and all 40 seats in the Legislative Council (Upper House) were up for election.
