Mayan ruins

Belize is home to the largest number of ancient Maya ruins in Central America. The ancient Maya civilisation thrived in the region between 250 AD and 900 AD, and the country is now covered in Mayan history. Here are some of the Mayan ruins you can visit during spring break in Belize:

Cahal Pech

Cahal Pech, meaning "place of ticks" in modern-day Maya, was the royal acropolis-palace of a Mayan ruling family. The site consists of seven plazas and over 30 structures, including temples, residential buildings, ball courts, an altar, and a sweat house, all situated on just 2 acres. Cahal Pech was settled around 1000 BC and abandoned by 800 AD. A royal burial chamber was found in one of the structures, containing shell and bone ornaments, pottery vessels, obsidian blades, and jade objects.

Xunantunich

Xunantunich was the first Mayan ruin to open to visitors in 1950. It was once a prosperous city state and was home to 200,000 people. The site gets its name, which means "stone woman" in Maya, from the ghost of a woman that is said to haunt the ruins. Visitors can approach the site by crossing the Mopan River on a hand-operated ferry and then climbing up to the limestone ridge that serves as the foundation for the city.

El Pilar

Lamanai

Lamanai, which means "submerged crocodile" in Maya, is one of the oldest continuously occupied Maya sites in Belize. It is prized for its ruins as well as its spectacular jungle setting near the New River Lagoon.
