The third instalment of the Maze Runner film series, *Maze Runner: The Death Cure*, was released in Australia on 26 January 2018.
The film is based on the 2011 novel of the same name, written by James Dashner, and serves as the finale to the Maze Runner Saga.
The plot centres around the young hero, Thomas, who is immune to the Flare virus that has ravaged the world's population. Thomas and his remaining Glader friends, Newt and Frypan, join forces with the Right Arm resistance to infiltrate the WCKD-controlled labyrinth known as the "Last City". Their mission is twofold: to rescue their captured Glader friend, Minho, and to find a cure for the deadly Flare disease.
The group faces numerous obstacles, including attacks by Cranks—humans infected with the Flare. They are aided by Jorge and Brenda, who join their cause. As they approach the Last City, they encounter protests outside its walls, as people rally to be let into the city. WCKD opens fire on the protesters, leading to the group's capture by masked men. One of the captors is revealed to be Gally, a familiar adversary from the first film.
Thomas confronts Ava Paige, the head of WCKD, and learns that a cure can be developed without sacrificing himself. However, Ava is killed by Janson, who is also infected by the Flare. Janson captures Thomas and intends to use his blood for the cure, but Teresa, another ally of Thomas, turns against Janson. This leads to a fight, and eventually, Thomas and Teresa escape to the roof, where she gives him the cure.
The group escapes with the rest of the Immunes to a safe haven island, where they can rebuild civilisation. Thomas discovers a note from Newt, asking him to look after their friends.
The film grossed over $288 million worldwide and received mixed reviews from critics. While the cast performances, action sequences, and visual effects were praised, the storyline, screenplay, and character development were criticised.
