What You'll Learn

Destiny 2: Into the Light
The highly anticipated free update for Destiny 2, Into the Light, was released on April 9, 2024, at 12 pm CT. The update included new gameplay, loot, and a new story for players to enjoy in the two months leading up to the launch of the next expansion, The Final Shape.
Into the Light was announced by Bungie, the developer of Destiny 2, as a free update for all players. In the months leading up to its release, Bungie hosted several livestreams to reveal and discuss the new content. The first livestream on March 19 showcased Onslaught, a new matchmade three-player activity with "wave defense" gameplay. Players can fight increasingly challenging waves of enemies in multiple locations and purchase defense systems with mode-specific currency. The second livestream on March 26 focused on returning weapons, upcoming rewards, and a new social space included in the update.
Destiny 2 has been through a tumultuous year following the release of the Lightfall DLC in February 2023, which received a disastrous reception. The subsequent delay of the major expansion, The Final Shape, left a gap in content that Into the Light aimed to fill. With the release of Into the Light, players had the opportunity to head back into Destiny 2 and experience new content before the launch of The Final Shape.
The Final Shape expansion, released on June 4, 2024, marked a significant milestone in Destiny 2's decade-long "Light and Darkness Saga." It introduced a new campaign, a new raid, the "multiclassing" Prismatic subclass, and powerful new gear. The expansion also addressed issues with the experience level system, replacing it with a Power level system that represents the average Power level of each piece of gear carried by the character. This system allows for better equipment and higher Power levels as players progress.

Destiny 2: The Final Shape
The Final Shape is the eighth expansion and the seventh year of extended content for Destiny 2, concluding the first major saga of the franchise, the "Light and Darkness" saga. The expansion revolves around the player's Guardian seeking out the franchise's main villain, the Witness, who disappeared through a portal that it created on the surface of the celestial being, the Traveler, at the end of Lightfall (2023). The Guardian and the Vanguard must stop the Witness from creating the titular Final Shape—the calcification and destruction of all life in the universe—and end the war between the Light and Darkness.
The Final Shape introduces a new free-roam destination, the Pale Heart, located within the Traveler. It is the first patrol zone that can be explored solo, unless a player has a pre-made fireteam. The expansion also includes a new raid, "Salvation's Edge", which takes place in the Witness's monolith in the Pale Heart, as well as two new dungeons, "Vesper's Host" and "Sundered Doctrine". In addition, The Final Shape introduces three new Light-based supers for each of the Guardian classes, as well as a sixth subclass called "Prismatic", which combines both Light and Darkness powers, allowing players to mix and match abilities and supers from the other five subclasses.
Ahead of its release, players could preload the expansion during a 25-hour maintenance period. The standard edition of The Final Shape includes a new story campaign, three new Supers, a new destination, new weapons and armour to collect, and one Episode in the year of The Final Shape.

The new season also adds the Portal, a central hub where players can choose their activities and earn daily and weekly rewards. Players can opt for quick ten-minute solo adventures or longer cooperative missions with their fireteams. The Edge of Fate expansion also continues the story of the Nine, expanding their role in this year's expansions.

Destiny 2 maintenance and updates
Destiny 2 has been undergoing updates and maintenance since its original release in 2014. Developer Bungie has released yearly expansions to push forward the narrative of its "Light and Darkness Saga". The latest expansion pack, The Final Shape, was released in June 2024, following a 25-hour maintenance period. This expansion pack aimed to conclude the decade-long saga and kick off a new era of stories.
Before this, in April 2024, Bungie released a free update for all players called Into the Light, which included new gameplay, loot, and a new story. This update also included a new matchmade three-player activity called Onslaught, featuring "wave defense" gameplay. Players could also use mode-specific currency to buy defense systems.
Destiny services may be taken offline for scheduled or emergency maintenance or to update the game to address gameplay issues or add in-game features. Players signed in shortly before maintenance will receive a notice via in-game messaging. Players can also follow @BungieHelp on Twitter for updates on the process and timeline for server maintenance or updates.
Players encountering connectivity issues after maintenance has concluded or who are unable to log in to Destiny when there is no planned maintenance may need to attempt basic connectivity troubleshooting, such as clearing their console cache, power cycling their network hardware, or reading through the Network Troubleshooting Guide.
