Belize's Easy-Access Neighbors

Belize is a small country in Central America, packed with islands, adventure and culture. It is easy to cross the entire country in a one-day road trip, but it is recommended to take things slowly and spend at least a week there. The country is bordered by Mexico to the north and Guatemala to the west and south.

Mexico

Crossing at Chetumal

There are several transport options for crossing the border at Chetumal. The cheapest option is to take the 'chicken bus' from Chetumal to Belize City, which costs around $8 USD. This bus runs roughly every hour and can be found at the 'New Market' bus station in Chetumal. However, this option can be confusing to locate and is not recommended for those with time constraints.

A faster and more comfortable option is to take a shuttle or private transfer. Shuttle services typically cost between $150-200 USD and can be booked online or in person. These shuttles can be shared with other travellers, reducing the cost per person. Venancio's van service is highly recommended for larger groups. Alternatively, solo female travellers have reported positive experiences with female taxi driver, Alberto, who charges $3,000 pesos each way.

Other Border Crossings

It is also possible to cross the border at Corozal. From here, you can take a ferry to Chetumal, which began operating in 2023. Boats also run from Corozal to San Pedro.

Onward Travel to Tulum

Once you have crossed the border into Mexico, there are several transport options for reaching Tulum. The ADO bus company operates throughout Mexico and offers an inexpensive and comfortable journey. The 3-hour journey from Chetumal to Tulum costs around $12 USD.

If you are travelling from San Ignacio in Belize to Tulum, the journey can take upwards of 12 hours. A recommended route is to take a taxi from San Ignacio to Belize City, and then a bus to Bacalar, Mexico, stopping at the borders to complete the necessary exit and entry procedures. From Bacalar, you can take an ADO bus to Tulum.

Entry Requirements

When exiting Belize, you will need to pay an exit fee of $20 USD or $41 BZD. It is recommended that you pay this in cash.

When entering Mexico, you may be asked to show proof that you have paid the Mexico tourism tax. This is often included in your airfare if you have flown into the country. It is important to have your receipt readily available to avoid being charged twice.

Guatemala

Where to Cross the Border

The only land border crossing between Belize and Guatemala is at Benque Viejo Del Carmen in Belize and Melchor de Mencos in Guatemala. The border is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week when entering Guatemala, and from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm when entering Belize.

Transportation

To get to the border from San Ignacio in Belize, you can take a shared taxi to Benque Viejo del Carmen, which costs around BZN$7 (US$3.50). Alternatively, you can take a public bus from the Public Bus Station in Belize City to San Ignacio for BZN$9-11 (US$4.50-$5.50).

Once you have crossed the border, you can take a colectivo (a shared minivan) from Melchor de Mencos to Flores in Guatemala. The colectivo costs around Q40 (US$5.19).

Border Process

When leaving Belize, you must pay a departure tax of BZN$40 (US$20). You will also need to get an exit stamp on your passport.

Upon entering Guatemala, you will need to fill out an immigration form and submit it along with your passport. You will then receive an entry stamp in your passport.

Money Exchange

It is recommended to change your money at the border, as Guatemalan quetzals are not accepted in Belize, and vice versa. There are usually plenty of money changers near the immigration offices.

Other Tips

• It is a good idea to book accommodation for your first night in Guatemala, as you may be asked about this at the border.
• Keep your valuables secure and out of reach to prevent petty theft.
• Be vigilant when visiting banks or ATMs.
• Avoid displaying signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive watches or jewellery.
• The standard COVID-19 testing and vaccination requirements for entry may change, so be sure to check the latest information before travelling.

However, other languages such as English, Creole, Garifuna, and Mayan are also spoken. The currency is the Honduran lempira.

By Plane

The quickest way to travel from Belize to El Salvador is by plane, which takes around 4 hours and costs between €180 and €750. There are no direct flights between the two countries, so you will need to make a stopover. Airlines that operate flights between the two countries include TAG Airlines, American Airlines, Volaris El Salvador, Tropic Air, and Maya Island Air.

By Bus

Taking the bus from Belize to El Salvador is the cheapest option, costing between €110 and €160. However, the journey is much longer, taking around 15 hours. Mundo Maya Travels (MayanOz) operates a bus service between the two countries, with tickets costing between €110 and €150.

By Car

If you prefer to travel by car, it is possible to drive from Belize to El Salvador. The drive will take approximately 11 hours, and you will need to cover a distance of 760km.

Nicaragua
