Placencia

As with anywhere in Belize, it is important to be vigilant and aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas or when alone at night. Petty theft and muggings can occur, so it is best not to carry too much cash or wear flashy items. US dollars are widely accepted, but it is recommended to carry smaller denominations as these are easier to break for small purchases. ATMs are available in Placencia, but it is best to withdraw cash in the morning to avoid machines running out of money.

When it comes to transportation, driving is safe during the day, but it is advised to avoid driving at night due to poor lighting and speed bumps that can be difficult to see. There are also reports of people drinking and driving, even on golf carts, so caution is advised when walking at night. Shuttles, taxis, and regional jet systems are considered safe options for getting around.

Overall, Placencia is a safe destination for tourists, but it is always important to stay vigilant and follow general safety guidelines when travelling to any new place.

San Pedro

However, San Pedro is not without its risks. The main concern for visitors is petty theft and pickpocketing, which can be easily mitigated by remaining vigilant and keeping an eye on your belongings. Solo female travellers should generally feel safe here, however, the standard precautions apply (never leave your drink unattended at the bar, never walk home alone intoxicated, etc.).

Scams are rare and not something to worry about. If you experience an emergency, dial 911 for assistance.

The islands couldn't be more different. Since the original plan was Caulker, I assume you wanted mellow and budget. Caulker is small, and you'll see the same people and hang out with them every hour. There are more upscale places there, like Caye Caulker Condos, which I really liked.

That's a great idea about yelling 'police' loudly in the extremely rare instance. Police would definitely... let's just say, "teach a lesson" to anybody hassling tourists.

I just got back from my trip to Caye Caulker – and yes, single female. The Belizean men were often offensive and inappropriate, but not once did I feel unsafe. I walked by myself down Front Street all the time. Lots of people are always around.

Diving and snorkelling are also popular here due to the nearby Belize Barrier Reef and world-class dive sites like the Blue Hole Natural Monument.

However, overall, there isn't a whole lot to do here other than slowing down and enjoying the natural surroundings of this tropical paradise.

Ambergris Caye

While violent crime is rare on Ambergris Caye, petty theft does occur on occasion, so it is important to pay attention to your belongings and not flaunt your valuables. The island is also known for its friendly and welcoming community. The locals take pride in their island's reputation and go above and beyond to ensure that visitors feel safe and comfortable.

In terms of safety precautions, it is recommended to avoid walking alone on dark beaches or roads at night, and to avoid getting drunk. It is also a good idea to take a photo of your passport and ID and save them on your phone, and to leave most of your wallet at home. Additionally, it is important to keep an eye on your purse or bag, and not to leave phones or other valuables unattended.

Corozal

Despite this, some residents report feeling safe in Corozal, with one long-time expat stating that they have never felt threatened and often leave their house unlocked. They attribute their sense of security to being integrated into the local community, as well as having dogs and friendly neighbours. Another expat mentions that, while there has been some petty theft in the area, violent crime against expats is very low.
