Belize's Educational Giant: Exploring The Country's Largest University

The University of Belize is the largest university in Belize. Established in 2000, it is an English-speaking multi-locational institute for higher education and the national university of Belize. Central America Health Sciences University

The Central America Health Sciences University (CAHSU), Belize Medical College was founded in 1996 and is located in Belize City, Belize. It is a medical school with a curriculum modelled after US medical programs. The university ensures its students receive a well-rounded education, allowing them to develop into skilled and responsible physicians well-equipped to enter the competitive job market upon graduation.

CAHSU offers an in-depth program in basic medical sciences, presenting students with a range of problems encountered by doctors and their solutions. The curriculum covers both basic sciences and clinical sciences. University of the West Indies

The University of the West Indies (UWI) is a public university system established in 1948 to serve the higher education needs of the residents of 18 English-speaking countries and territories in the Caribbean, including Belize. It is the largest and longest-serving education provider in the Commonwealth Caribbean, with five constituent campuses and several faculties and schools, some of which are replicated on all four physical main campuses. The Open Campus, which operates in Belize, does not have a faculty structure.

The UWI has a rich history that dates back to the Asquith Commission, which was established in 1943 to review the provision of higher education in British colonies. The university was founded on the recommendation of the Commission's sub-committee on the West Indies, chaired by Sir James Irvine. Initially, the University College of the West Indies (UCWI), as it was then called, was seated at Mona, about five miles from Kingston, Jamaica, and was in a special relationship with the University of London. The first faculty established was a medical school, and the University College Hospital of the West Indies, which later became the University Hospital of the West Indies, was opened in 1953. The hospital was established to address the need for medical care in the region and facilitates research and teaching, along with the Medical Services department of the Mona campus.
