Nudity and sexual content
In Australia, the American comedy-drama television series Shameless is rated MA15+ for seasons 1, 2, and 4 through 10, and R18+ for seasons 3 and 11. The show features frequent scenes of sex and nudity, with varying levels of explicitness.
For instance, in the very first episode, a man's genitals are shown, and Karen performs oral sex on Lip, who is then seen with a large semen stain on his underwear. In another scene, Fiona and Steve are shown having sex, with partial nudity and graphic movements. Lip and Karen are also shown having sex in a van, with explicit descriptions of their positions and movements, as well as full nudity of Lip's buttocks.
The show also includes scenes in gay strip clubs, though no nudity is depicted in these scenes. Occasional scenes of masturbation are also present, such as in Season 3, Episode 3, where an older man masturbates to a younger girl on a bus.
Beyond nudity and sexual content, the show also features graphic violence, drug use, and adult themes. This includes scenes of suicide, shootings, and fistfights with bloody details, and the use of drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, and opioids.

Drug use
Shameless contains a lot of drug use, mostly involving alcohol, marijuana, ecstasy pills, powdered cocaine, crystallized methamphetamine, crack cocaine, heroin, opium, Percocet, and Oxycontin. The show also references a myriad of other narcotics. While drug use is frequent, it becomes less so and briefer throughout the seasons.
One source breaks down the drug use by character, noting that Frank appears in 55 scenes smoking cigarettes, 248 scenes consuming alcohol, 42 scenes consuming weed, and 37 scenes consuming other drugs. Fiona, meanwhile, appears in 56 scenes smoking cigarettes, 116 scenes consuming alcohol, 7 scenes consuming weed, and 3 scenes consuming other drugs. Lip appears in 165 scenes smoking cigarettes, 77 scenes consuming alcohol, 20 scenes consuming weed, and 1 scene consuming other drugs.
The show has been described as having a strong anti-drug message, and one source notes that it will likely throw viewers off the idea of abusing drugs or alcohol. Despite this, the show has been deemed inappropriate for younger audiences due to its graphic drug use.
In addition to drug use, Shameless also contains moderate to heavy nudity, sex, rape, and violence, as well as crude sexual humour and coarse language.

Violence
In Australia, the violence depicted in Shameless has been deemed to warrant an MA15+ rating for most seasons (1, 2, 4-10), with seasons 3 and 11 receiving an R18+ rating.
The violence in Shameless is described as "modest within the cinematic/TV range" and is usually driven by specific social or age-related behaviours. There is no gore or gratuitous bloodletting. However, there are some strongly violent scenes with visible blood, such as characters with nasty bruises or bleeding noses or lips.
The show also contains sexual violence and references to sexual violence, particularly in the first season. These scenes are often accompanied by strong sex scenes, crude sexual humour, nudity, and sexualised imagery, which contribute to the higher age rating in Australia.
The violence in Shameless is not senseless or glorified but rather a reflection of the harsh realities faced by the characters, who are struggling with poverty and other social issues. It is important to note that the show is a comedy-drama and that the violence is not the sole focus of the narrative.

Alcohol consumption
Despite these guidelines, more than one in four Australian adults (26.8%) exceeded the recommended weekly alcohol limit in 2022. This includes those who consumed more than 10 drinks in a week or had 5 or more drinks in a day at least monthly in the last year. Males were more likely to exceed the guideline than females, and young adults aged 18-24 were the age group most likely to exceed the recommended limits. Interestingly, consumption peaked in later years, with one in four people aged 55-64 and one in five people aged 65-74 consuming more than 10 drinks in a week.
Several factors influence alcohol consumption patterns in Australia. Individuals born in Australia are more likely to exceed the guidelines than those born overseas. Similarly, those who speak English as their main language at home tend to drink more than those who speak other languages. Geographical location also plays a role, with people in Outer Regional and Remote Australia exceeding the guidelines more often than those in Major Cities.
Employment status is another factor, as employed individuals are more likely to exceed the alcohol guidelines than the unemployed or those outside the labour force. Surprisingly, people living in areas of least disadvantage are more likely to drink excessively than those in areas of most disadvantage. These statistics highlight the complex nature of alcohol consumption in Australia and the need for ongoing public health initiatives to address harmful drinking behaviours.
