What You'll Learn

Income support payments
The Australian Government provides a range of income support payments to assist people in different life stages. These payments are delivered by Services Australia, with the Department of Veterans' Affairs also making payments in certain instances. Income support payments are available for those unable to work, seeking work, or studying.
The Age Pension is one such payment, designed to support the basic living standards of older Australians aged 67 and above who meet the residency requirements. A means test is also applied to determine the amount paid. Additionally, the Home Equity Access Scheme enables eligible senior Australians to access the equity in their homes or other real estate through a government loan. This scheme was previously known as the Pension Loans Scheme.
For those seeking work, the JobSeeker Payment is available for individuals aged between 22 and 67 who are looking for employment or unable to work temporarily due to illness or injury. The Youth Allowance is also offered to students and apprentices to support them financially during their studies or training. Furthermore, the Paid Parental Leave Scheme provides financial assistance to new parents, with plans to expand it to 26 weeks from 1 July 2026, including the addition of Superannuation payments from 1 July 2025.
The Australian Government also recognises the importance of supporting families with children. The Family Tax Benefit is a payment designed to assist eligible families with the costs of raising children. This benefit helps ease the financial burden on families, ensuring that they can better provide for their children's needs.

Payments for students and apprentices
The Australian Government offers a range of payments for students and apprentices to support them financially during their studies or training. One of the main payments is the Youth Allowance for students and Australian Apprentices. This payment is available for those who are studying full-time or have a concessional study load, with their course lasting at least 12 months. The Youth Allowance is also available for Australian Apprentices, regardless of their study load.
To be eligible for the Youth Allowance, applicants must meet certain criteria. The government assesses whether an applicant is dependent or independent and uses income and assets tests to determine eligibility and payment amounts. If an applicant is younger than 18 and dependent, their parent or guardian usually receives the payment on their behalf. However, in some cases, applicants may be eligible for different rates, such as the long-term income support rate.
Additionally, to receive the Youth Allowance, individuals must study an approved course at an approved education provider. This includes distance education, but it must still be an approved course with a recognised institution. There is also a time limit on how long one can receive the Youth Allowance.
The amount of the Youth Allowance payment may be reviewed and adjusted based on changes in the recipient's circumstances or those of their family members. For example, if a recipient is a dependent, details of their parents' or guardians' taxable income may be requested annually. Similarly, if a recipient is a student, they may be asked about their future study intentions.

Paid Parental Leave Scheme
The Australian government's Paid Parental Leave scheme allows eligible employees to receive payments while on parental leave. This scheme is managed by Services Australia.
Eligibility
As of 1 July 2024, eligible employees who are the primary carers of a child born or adopted can receive up to 22 weeks of Parental Leave Pay, paid at the National Minimum Wage. The date of the child's birth or adoption affects Parental Leave Pay, including who can get it, how much they receive, and when they get paid. For example, for a child born or adopted before 1 July 2023, parents may be eligible for a payment of up to 18 weeks.
Applying for Parental Leave Pay
To apply for Parental Leave Pay, you must inform your employer. Typically, your employer will pay your Parental Leave Pay according to your standard pay cycle. It is recommended that you discuss your leave with your employer at least ten weeks before your child's expected date of birth or adoption. Your employer may need to register and learn about the Paid Parental Leave scheme on the Services Australia website.
Other Sources of Paid Parental Leave
In addition to the Australian government's Paid Parental Leave scheme, some employers may offer parental leave payments through agreements, employment contracts, or workplace policies. Employees should first consult their employer about their parental leave payments. For instance, an employee may receive both the government's Parental Leave Pay and employer-funded paid leave during their leave period.

Residential aged care payments
Residential aged care fees are contributions from the resident to their provider for the cost of their care and accommodation in an aged care home. The Australian Government subsidises a large portion of the cost of aged care, but residents are expected to contribute to their costs of care if they can afford to do so. The Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care outlines the following fees:
Basic Daily Fee
This is payable by everyone in residential care and is called a 'standard resident contribution' in aged care legislation. The maximum fee is 85% of the single basic age pension. The fee amount changes with the pension rate every March and September. The Department of Veterans' Affairs may pay the basic daily fee for former Prisoners of War (POWs) and Victoria Cross (VC) recipients.
Means-Tested Care Fee
This is payable if a person's income and assets are above a certain amount. It is calculated by Services Australia based on a means assessment and is in addition to the basic daily fee. This fee is different for everyone. Once a resident reaches the annual cap, their means-tested care fee is reduced to zero.
Accommodation Costs
These are payable to cover the cost of accommodation in an aged care home. This is called an 'accommodation payment' or 'accommodation contribution'. The latter is for residents with low means who do not pay the agreed room price. The government may pay some or all of the resident's accommodation costs through the accommodation supplement.
Extra Service Fee
This is payable by residents in an extra service place.
Additional Service Fees
These are payable if a person agrees to receive additional services beyond what the aged care home is required to provide.
The My Aged Care website has a fee estimator that can provide an estimate of the fees for a Home Care Package or aged care home.

Energy Bill Relief Fund
The Energy Bill Relief Fund is a direct energy bill rebate provided by the Australian Government. The Commonwealth Government has announced a $1.8 billion extension of the Energy Bill Relief Fund by six months in the 2025–26 Budget.
Australian households and eligible small businesses with electricity bills may receive up to $150 in energy bill rebates from 1 July 2025 to the end of 2025. This is in addition to the existing $3.5 billion energy bill relief being rolled out in the 2024–25 financial year. Under the 2024-25 program, households are eligible for up to $300 of energy bill relief, and eligible small businesses may receive up to $325.
Rebates will be automatically applied to your electricity bill in two $75 quarterly instalments. Most customers do not need to take any action to receive rebates. However, households in embedded networks (such as where you receive electricity from your strata or landlord in a caravan park, apartment building, or retirement village) will need to refer to the process in their state or territory to receive the rebate.
Small businesses must meet their state and territory's definition of an electricity 'small customer', as determined by their annual electricity consumption threshold, to be eligible for rebates. Selected small businesses in embedded networks will be able to receive their Bill Relief payment directly from their energy provider and will not need to apply separately.
