The formation of Brunswick County in 1764 was the culmination of a rivalry between Brunswick Town and Wilmington, which began when Wilmington replaced Brunswick Town as the county seat of New Hanover County in 1740. This change angered Brunswick Town residents, and the subsequent growth in popularity and importance of Wilmington contributed to the decline of Brunswick Town. By 1775, only a few families remained in Brunswick Town, and they eventually fled due to the threat of attack during the Revolutionary War. The town was razed by British troops in 1776 and never rebuilt.

Brunswick Town was established in 1726 by Maurice Moore, son of a former South Carolina governor. It served as the county seat of New Hanover County from 1729 to 1740 and then as the county seat of Brunswick County from its formation in 1764 until 1779. During this time, Brunswick Town was home to two Royal governors: Arthur Dobbs, who resided in the governor's mansion, Russellborough; and William Tryon, who succeeded Dobbs in 1765 and planned to build a superior mansion for himself. Tryon moved into Tryon Palace in Craven County in 1770.

In 1779, the County Seat was moved from Brunswick Town to Lockwood Folly, and in 1808, it was moved again to Smithville, known today as Southport. Smithville remained the county seat for 167 years until it was relocated to its present location just below the Town of Bolivia in 1975.
