Australian Capital Territory
The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is an internal territory of Australia. Canberra, the capital city of Australia, is situated within the territory and is the territory's primate city. It is located in the southeastern Australian mainland as an enclave surrounded by the state of New South Wales (NSW). The territory was transferred to the federal government by New South Wales in 1911, two years prior to the capital city being founded and formally named as Canberra in 1913.
The ACT is renowned for its cosmopolitan atmosphere. The state boasts some of Australia’s most important national institutions, including the National Gallery of Australia, the National Museum of Australia, Parliament House, the High Court of Australia, and the head offices of many Australian Government agencies. The territory also hosts the majority of foreign embassies in Australia, as well as regional headquarters of many international organisations, not-for-profit groups, lobbying groups, and professional associations.
The ACT was the first mainland Australian jurisdiction to achieve 100% renewable energy supply and is on track to achieve zero net emissions by 2045. The Territory also has the highest number of electric vehicles and charging stations in Australia (per capita). Canberra is one of the most liveable cities in the world, with a unique Australian experience, and provides easy access to national parks, Australia's biggest snowfields in winter, and the pristine beaches of the New South Wales south coast in summer.
The territory's southern and western parts are mountainous, reaching a maximum height of 6,279 feet (1,914 meters) at Bimberi Peak. In the northeastern section, there are broad valleys between rounded hills. While much of the generally rugged topography of the Australian Capital Territory allows small-scale farming, forestry, and grazing, only about one-third of the territory is suitable for urban development. The area is drained by the Murrumbidgee River, which flows from the Snowy Mountains northward through the territory.
