Corozal Town is located on a bay of the Caribbean Sea, and its waters are often a milky green-blue shade, especially during the rainy season. Corozal is a sleepy seaside town, located just south of the Río Hondo (Hondo River), which forms the border between Mexico and Belize. Set on a crystal-clear bay, Corozal was an important centre on the early Mayan trading routes, and the evidence remains in the ruins of Cerros and Santa Rita, and the old English Fort Barley.
Today, Corozal is home to a growing expatriate community, mostly concentrated in the northern tip of the town at Consejo Shores, and along the seaside in the Copper Bank and Chunox areas. While not part of the traditional tourist circuit, Corozal Town makes a good base for fishing excursions in the calm bay; bird- and wildlife-viewing tours into the nearby Shipstern Nature Reserve; shopping trips to neighbouring Chetumal, Mexico; and explorations of the aforementioned Mayan ruins.

History: the guesthouse was once the site of a drug bust
The Copa Banana Guesthouse in Corozal Town, Belize, was once the site of a drug bust. In March 2006, a guest at the guesthouse recalled noticing a heavy police presence when they returned from a drive to town. The owners of the Copa Banana, as well as one guest, were handcuffed and laid on the ground. The police informed the guest that the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) had checked in and befriended the owners as part of an investigation for the local police. When the time was right, the local police raided the property.
A crack pipe, marijuana, and other smoking devices were found on the premises. The guest and owners were arrested and taken to jail without bail until Monday morning. This incident attracted attention in Corozal Town, and locals shared rumours that a month prior, the owners of the Copa Banana had been caught with five vehicle loads of smuggled goods from Chetumal, Mexico. This incident resulted in the closing of the Consejo Customs Compound and the suspension of boat trips to Chetumal.
The guesthouse has since been renovated and now offers guests a comfortable and relaxing environment with clean, tastefully decorated suites. Each suite has its own personality and is equipped with modern amenities, including cable television, air conditioning, and private baths. The guesthouse provides a peaceful retreat with beach access, a swimming pool, and complimentary bicycles for guests to explore the area.
