Rutgers Housing: Guaranteed?

Rutgers University–New Brunswick provides students with a variety of housing options across its five campuses. While housing is not guaranteed for all students, Residence Life has been able to accommodate every first-year student who has requested housing by the June application deadline. Presidential Scholars, however, are guaranteed on-campus housing for all four years, with the requirement to live on campus during their first two years. Additionally, Residence Life guarantees housing to all rising sophomores.

Students are encouraged to apply for housing as early as possible and by the specified deadlines to increase their chances of securing their preferred accommodation.

Students must apply for housing

Rutgers University–New Brunswick provides students with a variety of housing options across its five campuses. Each campus has a different housing program, so be sure to check the housing website of the campus you will be attending for specific information and details.

To apply for housing, you must first accept your offer of admission and create your NetID. Once you have your NetID, you can complete a housing application. It may take a few days for your NetID to become active in the housing system.

If you are a returning or continuing student, you can log in with your NetID and password to see available applications. If you are having difficulty logging in, you can look up your NetID using the NetID Lookup application. If you have forgotten your password, you can visit the password reset page.

The College Avenue Campus, for example, is located in the heart of New Brunswick, just a short walk or bike ride from the Rutgers University campus. It offers a range of amenities, including a state-of-the-art fitness centre, comfortable study spaces, and upscale accommodations.

The Cook/Douglass Campus offers a unique dining option called HARVEST, which embodies the mission of The New Jersey Institute of Food, Nutrition, and Health.

There are different fees and deadlines for applications depending on the type of student you are. Here is a breakdown of the information I found:

New Incoming Students

New incoming students should apply for housing through their Rutgers Portal. There is no information on the application fee for new incoming students.

Continuing Students

Continuing students enrolled in the Honors College can apply to live within dedicated honors residential Changemaking Communities. To be considered for housing, students must complete both the General Housing Application and the Honors College Housing Application. Applications for the 2024-25 academic year were open from Monday, January 22, 2024, to Tuesday, February 6, 2024.

Spring Housing

Spring 2023 semester housing is available to all registered Rutgers University–New Brunswick students who are not currently assigned on-campus housing. There are four application types: First-Year Application, Continuing and Transfer Application, Single-Graduate Application, and Family Application. No deposit is required to apply for spring housing. The priority application deadline for spring housing was January 4, 2023.

Graduate/Family Students

The graduate/family housing application process is not yet available.

These self-selected groups share similar interests and make meaningful connections with students and faculty for a more rewarding academic experience. The different offerings include:

Rutgers also offers interest-based or thematic residencies, including Douglass Residential College and Honors College, which emphasise shared respect and responsibility, as well as diversity.

Honors College students have the option of applying to live within dedicated honors residential Changemaking Communities throughout the Rutgers-New Brunswick campuses. These integrated communities allow students to foster new connections while maintaining a sense of community with their cohort and the support of a Changemaking Mentor.

Presidential Scholars are guaranteed on-campus housing for all four years and are required to live on campus during their first two years.
