The 1987 Mexico City Air Disaster

On July 30, 1987, a tragic incident occurred involving a Belize Air International cargo flight bound for Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The plane, a Boeing C-97G Stratofreighter, crashed onto the Mexico-Toluca highway during rush hour. This accident resulted in the deaths of 49 people, including 44 on the ground, and injured at least 20 more. The cause of the crash was attributed to a shift in the cargo and a short circuit, which led to a problem with the landing gear and increased drag.

Belize Defence Force Air Wing Accidents

The Belize Defence Force Air Wing, formed in 1983, has experienced a few accidents over the years. In 1998, one of their Britten-Norman Defender aircraft (BDF-01) crashed near Orange Walk, and in 2007, its replacement (BDF-05) crashed in a marshy area near the Belizean coast without any fatalities. Additionally, in 2020, one of the two UH-1H helicopters donated by Taiwan (BDF12) crashed.

There have been several accidents involving Cessna 208B Grand Caravan aircraft in Belize. In 2006, one crashed off High Bluff, and in 2007 and 2008, there were crashes off Belize City. Fortunately, in all these incidents, the occupants escaped with minor or no injuries. Another incident occurred in 2014, when a Cessna 208B Grand Caravan overshot the runway at Belize City-Sir Barry Bowen Municipal Airport, ending up in the sea. While there were no fatalities, the aircraft was damaged beyond repair.

Belize has witnessed several other air accidents, including the crash of a Learjet 35 in Santa Marta in 2020, a BAe 125-700A in Sartaneja in 2020, a Gulfstream GIIB in Blue Creek in 2019, and a Beechcraft B200 Super King Air, also in Blue Creek, in 2018. Many of these incidents involved illegal flights and landings on unauthorised strips, with occupants often escaping the scene.

Belize's coastal plains

The northern coastal areas feature mangrove swamps, which gradually give way to tropical pine savannah and hardwood forest as one moves inland. The northern lowlands are drained by several major rivers, including the Belize River (also known as the Old River), the New River, and the Hondo River. Victoria Peak is a Natural Monument located inside the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary.
