Austria's Long History In Hetalia: A Country's Legacy

Austria is a supporting character in the series Hetalia: Axis Powers. He is the personification of Austria and has violet eyes and somewhat wavy brown hair, with a wild strand that represents Mariazell. He doesn't smile often and wears glasses, a long navy blue coat with a white jabot, and black pants (coloured tan in some earlier artwork). He also has a mole on his face, which is a similar thing to Italy's curl, likely acting as an erogenous zone for him. Austria and Switzerland are former childhood friends. In their adulthood, Switzerland denies ever having been friends with Austria or having had any close connection to him. However, Switzerland's protectiveness of his little sister Liechtenstein, who he found and took into his care, reminds him of his childhood days with Austria.

Switzerland and Austria are a common pairing, often called SwissAus, SwitzAus, or Edelweiss, due to their national flower being the same. The ship is labelled as possibly incestuous due to the fact that in a request comic during the Christmas 2011 event, Germania claimed that Switzerland and Austria were both his family members.

Switzerland and Austria seem to have a much better relationship in their childhood. In one strip, a young Switzerland is shown carrying a battered Austria on his back, scolding him for getting beaten 51 ("52!") times. Austria laughs about his situation, to which Switzerland tells him that it isn't funny and that he needs to get a better military.

Upon first glance, Austria's aristocratic attitude and Switzerland's more violent behaviour would not mesh well. However, some supporters of this pairing claim that they are tsundere towards each other. Also, seeing as Austria is one of the Hetalia characters that has never threatened Liechtenstein, it could be a factor that makes him more acceptable to Switzerland and his protectiveness of his little sister.
