The windows are low to the floor, which was how one accessed the porch. The front rooms and upstairs served as the sheriff's home, except for two small cells for women or children, and the basement was used to house mentally ill prisoners. The last sheriff to reside in the building was Sheriff Paul Gordon in 1977.

The building is a conglomeration of architectural styles and is one of the oldest structures in Angola, standing for 121 years. The jail was not the first in the county, as a log structure was built in 1839 with a frame built over and around it, which still acted as a cell.
