History

Albion and Brunswick are two towns in the state of Maine, United States, with a distance of around 35 miles (56.33 kilometres) between them.

Albion, located in Kennebec County, was first settled in 1790 as Freetown Plantation by Congregational minister Daniel Lovejoy. It was incorporated as the Town of Fairfax on March 9, 1804. Over the next decade, Albion underwent several boundary changes, annexing land from Winslow in 1810 and giving up segments of land in 1813, 1816, and 1818, which eventually became part of China. The town's name changed to Ligonia in 1821 and then to Albion, the ancient name of England, on February 25, 1824.

Albion played a role in the anti-slavery movement as the birthplace of Elijah Parish Lovejoy, son of Daniel Lovejoy. Elijah Parish Lovejoy became a renowned journalist and a fearless opponent of slavery. A plaque commemorating his work rests outside the town library.

Brunswick, located in Cumberland County, has a longer history dating back to the early 17th century. The area was first settled by Thomas Purchase and other fishermen in 1628 and was known by its Indian name, Pejepscot, meaning "the long, rocky rapids part [of the river]". The settlement was placed under the protection of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1639. However, during King Philip's War in 1676, Pejepscot was burned and abandoned. The village of Brunswick faced destruction and was abandoned multiple times during periods of conflict with the Abenaki Indians, including King William's War and Dummer's War.

In the 1700s, the area began to see more permanent resettlement and the establishment of English-speaking Protestant groups. The township was constituted in 1717 and named "Brunswick" in honour of the House of Brunswick and King George I. Brunswick became incorporated as a town in 1739 and developed as a prosperous seaport. The town played a significant role in the lumber industry, with as many as 25 sawmills, and also engaged in shipbuilding.

The founding of Bowdoin College in 1794 further enhanced Brunswick's cultural and intellectual prominence. Notable figures associated with the town include authors Harriet Beecher Stowe and Robert P. T. Coffin, Civil War general Joshua L. Chamberlain, poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and president Franklin Pierce.
