Belize City is the largest city in Belize and is located on a peninsula on the east coast of the country, where the Belize River meets the Caribbean Sea. As the country's principal port and financial and industrial hub, it is a popular destination for cruise ships and a jumping-off spot for further exploration of Belize.
Belize City is a great base for excursions to other parts of Belize, including the Cayo District's caves and Maya archaeological sites along the Macal and Belize rivers. The city is also home to the only manual swing bridge in the world and the oldest Anglican cathedral in Central America, St. John's Cathedral.
Belize City is also a jumping-off spot for Belize's Caribbean destinations, such as Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, the famous Blue Hole, the Turneffe Islands, and over a hundred other small cayes scattered along the Belize Great Barrier Reef.
With a rich history, the city was once the capital of British Honduras and has been directly struck by two hurricanes since 1900. Today, it offers a range of accommodations, restaurants, and cultural attractions, including museums, art galleries, and a lively arts and music scene.
