Aeroflot's history
Aeroflot, the Russian airline, was formerly the national airline of the Soviet Union. The Lisunov Li-2 (a licensed-built Douglas DC-3) became the backbone of the Aeroflot fleet on mainline trunk routes. During World War II, Aeroflot crews and technicians were mobilized for the Soviet war effort.
Following the war, Aeroflot continued to expand its operations. It began the world's first civilian jet air service in 1956 using Soviet Tu-104 aircraft. The airline also helped develop the world's first supersonic airliner, the Soviet Tu-144, which first flew in 1968. By the late 1980s, Aeroflot's fleet of over 1,300 airliners and several thousand smaller planes served 3,600 cities and towns in the Soviet Union and flew international routes to more than 100 countries. In 1990, Aeroflot carried a total of 138 million passengers, making it the world's largest airline at the time.
After the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991, Aeroflot was restructured and renamed Aeroflot–Russian International Airlines in 1992. It became the state-owned airline of the new Russian government and began flying aircraft made by foreign manufacturers such as Airbus and Boeing. The airline continued to be a leader in providing international flights from Russia, serving more than 40 countries worldwide.
