BAH rates can decrease in certain situations

There are three ways in which your BAH rate can decrease:

• Permanent Change of Station (PCS): If you PCS to a new location, your BAH rate will change to the rate in effect at that duty station on your report date.
• Demotion: If you are demoted and your pay grade decreases, your BAH rate will change to the current rate for your lower pay grade, which may be lower than your previous rate.
• Change in Dependency Status: If your dependency status changes (from having a dependent to not having one, or vice versa), your BAH rate will adjust to the rate effective on the date of the change.

It is important to note that promotions will not lower your BAH rate, even if the higher pay grade has a lower rate. You will receive the higher rate between the two pay grades.
