Charles V's Rule: Spain And Austria's Shared History

Charles V, also known as Charles I of Spain, was the Holy Roman Emperor from 1519 to 1556, the King of Spain from 1516 to 1556, and the Archduke of Austria from 1519 to 1521. He inherited a vast empire that included parts of central Europe, the Spanish Empire, the Low Countries, and large areas in the Americas. Charles was the heir of three of Europe's leading dynasties: the Houses of Valois-Burgundy, Habsburg, and Trastámara. He inherited the Burgundian Netherlands and the Franche-Comté from the House of Valois-Burgundy; Austria and other lands in central Europe from the House of Habsburg; and the crowns of Castile and Aragon, along with their colonies in the Americas, from the House of Trastámara. Charles was the first king to rule Castile and Aragon simultaneously in his own right, and is sometimes referred to as the first King of Spain.

Charles's dominions in Europe included the Holy Roman Empire, extending from Germany to northern Italy, with rule over the Austrian hereditary lands and Burgundian Low Countries, and Spain with its possessions of the southern Italian kingdoms of Naples, Sicily, and Sardinia. In the Americas, he oversaw the continuation of Spanish colonisation and a short-lived German colonisation. The personal union of the European and American territories he ruled was the first collection of realms labelled the empire on which the sun never sets.

Charles V's rule in Spain

Charles was unable to achieve his goal of establishing a universal empire. He ultimately abdicated in 1556, dividing his empire between his brother, Ferdinand, and his son, Philip II.

Charles V's rule in the Holy Roman Empire

Charles V's rule in the Low Countries

Charles inherited the Burgundian territories, also called the "Low Countries", "Flanders", or "Belgica", from his father Philip in 1506. These territories included Flanders, Artois, Brabant, Limburg, Luxembourg, Hainaut, Holland, Namur, Mechelen, and Zeeland. Charles also inherited the exclaves of Franche-Comté and Charolais. The remaining provinces of the Low Countries, initially outside of Charles's jurisdiction, were Guelders, Friesland, Utrecht, Overijssel, Groningen, Drenthe, and Zutphen.

Charles was recognised as Lord of the Netherlands with the title of Charles II of Burgundy by the States General of the Netherlands in 1506. He was also recognised as Prince of Asturias (heir presumptive of Spain) and honorific Archduke (heir apparent of Austria).

Charles's aunt Margaret of Austria acted as regent until he came of age in 1515. Margaret soon found herself at war with France over Charles's requirement to pay homage to the French king for Flanders, as his father had done. The outcome was that France relinquished its ancient claim on Flanders in 1528.

Charles extended the Burgundian territory with the annexation of Tournai, Artois, Utrecht, Groningen, and Guelders. The Seventeen Provinces had been unified by Charles's Burgundian ancestors, but nominally were fiefs of either France or the Holy Roman Empire. Charles eventually won the Guelders Wars and united all provinces under his rule, the last one being the Duchy of Guelders.

In 1549, Charles issued a Pragmatic Sanction, declaring the Low Countries to be a unified entity of which his family would be the heirs. The Low Countries held an essential place in the Empire and were a significant source of income for the Imperial treasury.

Charles's Burgundian territories were generally loyal to him throughout his reign. The important city of Ghent rebelled in 1539 due to heavy tax payments demanded by Charles. The rebellion did not last long, however, as Charles's military response, with reinforcement from Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, 3rd Duke of Alba, was swift and humiliating to the rebels of Ghent.

Charles made 10 voyages to the Low Countries during his reign.

Charles V's rivalry with Francis I of France

Charles V and Francis I of France were locked in a rivalry that began around 1500 and lasted for decades. Both monarchs desired supremacy in Europe and were in frequent states of war. The rivalry was driven by personal animosity and the fact that Charles's vast territories threatened to surround France.

The rivalry between the two rulers led to lengthy wars, with both laying claim to lands in Italy. Charles also wished to regain Burgundy, which had been lost to the French in 1477, and there were disputes over rights in Flanders and Artois, and over the kingdom of Navarre in the Pyrenees.

The two rulers were at war from 1521 to 1525, 1526 to 1529, 1536 to 1538, and 1542 to 1544. Charles's forces were generally successful in these conflicts, and he was able to capture Francis at the Battle of Pavia in 1525. However, Francis refused to recognise the peace that had been imposed on him and formed the 'Holy League of Cognac' with Milan, Venice, and Pope Clement VII to counter the Habsburgs' power in Italy.

The rivalry between Charles and Francis was intense and personal, and at times, they challenged each other to duels. The two rulers were often in close proximity, such as when Charles travelled from Spain through France to the Low Countries in 1539 and early 1540.

The rivalry ended with Francis's death in 1547, but his successor, Henry II, continued the conflict with Charles, which did not end until after the latter's abdication and death.

Charles V's rivalry with Suleiman the Magnificent

Charles V and Suleiman the Magnificent were two of the most powerful rulers of the 16th century. Both were young sovereigns, with Charles being elected Holy Roman Emperor in 1519 and Suleiman becoming Sultan in 1520. Suleiman inherited a powerful empire from his father and sought to expand it further, while Charles was determined to preserve the integrity of the Holy Roman Empire. The rivalry between the two rulers was driven by their competing claims to the title of Emperor and their conflicting religious beliefs, with Charles being a devout Catholic and Suleiman a Sunni Muslim.

The rivalry between Charles and Suleiman played out across Europe and the Mediterranean. In the east, Suleiman led campaigns against Hungary and Austria, threatening Vienna and capturing Belgrade and Buda. Charles responded by fortifying Vienna and leading a counter-attack across the Danube. In the Mediterranean, Suleiman's admiral Hayreddin Barbarossa devastated the Spanish and Italian coasts, prompting Charles to launch expeditions to North Africa, including the capture of Tunis in 1535. Suleiman also formed an alliance with Francis I of France, a longtime rival of Charles, which further heightened tensions.

The rivalry between Charles and Suleiman was not only military but also ideological. Suleiman, known as "the Law-maker" to the Turks, refused to refer to Charles as anything other than the "king of Spain." Meanwhile, Charles always referred to Suleiman and the Ottomans as "the Turk(s)" in his writings. Despite their differences, the two rulers shared some similarities. Both were poets and cultured cosmopolitans, and both were known as "'Defender of the Faith' within their respective domains.

The rivalry between Charles and Suleiman ultimately ended without a clear victor. Suleiman failed to capture Vienna, but he succeeded in expanding the Ottoman Empire and asserting his power in the Mediterranean. Charles, on the other hand, was unable to prevent the expansion of the Ottoman Empire or fully unite Christendom against the Turkish threat. Nonetheless, he managed to defend Vienna and maintain his hold on central Europe. The rivalry between these two powerful rulers shaped the course of European history and left a lasting impact on the regions they contested.
