Belize's Sandy Beaches: A Tropical Paradise

Belize is known for its stunning beaches, with golden and white sandy beaches that are a boat or plane ride away from Belize City. The beaches in Belize offer a range of activities, from relaxing on the sandy shores with a cocktail to scuba diving and snorkelling. Belize has the largest intact reef system in the Northern Hemisphere, and the country is also home to the world's largest barrier reef after Australia. Ambergris Caye

The best beaches on Ambergris Caye are found to the south and north of its only town, San Pedro. The beach across from Ramon's Village Resort is one of the most popular spots, with raked sands and clear waters. There are also beaches on the island's northern tip, but they can only be reached by boat.

For a more secluded beach experience, head to Secret Beach on the west side of the island. This spot used to be deserted but now features beach bars and restaurants. Hopkins Village Beach

Placencia Peninsula

The Placencia Peninsula is a charming, low-key fishing village located at the southern tip of the Stann Creek's 16-mile-long Placencia Peninsula in southeastern Belize. The peninsula measures approximately 19 miles from north to south but is just half a mile wide. With the look and feel of an island, it is often described as the "caye (island) you can drive to". Locals still head out to sea every morning in small boats to bring in the daily catch, and visitors can wander along the village's 4,000-foot-long pedestrian-only "main street", adorned with colourful murals and artwork.

Placencia is just one of three villages located on the peninsula, but it boasts lovely shops, charming cafes, seafood restaurants, a small medical clinic, and an airfield. The beach stretches across three villages: Maya Beach, Seine Bight, and Placencia Village. Maya Beach and Seine Bight have fine, white sand beaches, while Placencia Village's tourist strip has golden sands and several bars and restaurants along its coastline.

Placencia is renowned for having some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, with 16 miles of tranquil beaches and a lagoon to the west and the Caribbean Sea to the east. It is a popular eco-destination, offering outdoor adventures such as hiking through mountainous rainforests, kayaking, deep-sea fishing, diving, and exploring Mayan ruins. Tour guides and dive centres offer various excursions, with boat rides to the outer cayes being a favourite among visitors.

The peninsula is also a great spot for tourists interested in a beach and jungle vacation, as it is located near many top jungle attractions. The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and Bocawina National Park offer incredible hiking opportunities just an hour away by car. Red Bank Village is home to magnificent scarlet macaws from December to March, and Monkey River offers a wonderful boat tour followed by a jungle hike in search of howler monkeys.

Placencia is a great place to stay in Belize for beach and jungle vacations, with a range of luxury resorts, budget-friendly spots, and upscale vacation villas with kitchens or all-inclusive packages. The best time to visit Placencia is from December to April, during the dry season, when you can expect beautiful days with clear blue skies. However, this is also the high tourism season, so hotels and tours are more expensive. Placencia is also known for its laid-back, no-shoes ambience, and the locals go out of their way to ensure visitors enjoy their stay.

Secret Beach

The beach can be reached by renting a golf cart, and it is about a 45-minute drive north of San Pedro. The road to Secret Beach is pockmarked and winds through a swamp, but once you arrive, you will find calm, clear, and shallow water that is great for snorkelling and other water activities. There is also a party scene, with several bars along the beachfront, including Pirate's Not-So-Secret Beach Bar & Grill.

There are lounge chairs available for visitors to use, and the water is warm and shallow, allowing visitors to walk a fair distance before it gets too deep. There are also tables and chairs in the water for dining, and vendors selling souvenirs.

While Secret Beach is a popular destination, some visitors have noted that it can be crowded, with vendors frequently approaching visitors to sell food, drinks, massages, hair braiding, and trinkets. It is also a little bumpy getting there, as the road is full of potholes.

South Water Caye

Belize has plenty of sandy beaches, and South Water Caye is one of them. Located in Southern Belize, South Water Caye is a tranquil island escape, just off the coast of Hopkins in Stann Creek. It is a small island, spanning only 15 acres, and is known for its secluded and relaxed atmosphere. The island is situated in the middle of the country's largest marine protected area, the South Water Caye Marine Reserve, which is home to hundreds of species of fish and coral. This makes it an ideal spot for marine exploration, snorkelling, and diving.
